 | | OBIT: <FSR>Heh, barely. The stupid horse doesn't even know how to set up the board correctly, with the white-squared corner on the right. His strategy also leaves a lot to be desired. In the chess position he is analyzing at the end of the episode, the three knights that have moved from their starting position are all on the edge of the board. |

 | | harrylime: Rio Bravo.
Watched it last night.
Ricky Nelson is cool. Angie Dickinson is delectable. Martin is cool and it's the best I've seen him. Wayne is Wayne. Brennan was a nasty SOB in My Darling Clamantine .. but here he's a loveable old scroat. It's a movie about belonging. About loyalty and sticking together. I love it. |

 | | FSR: <OBIT> Give the poor horse a break. He probably had no one to play against except Wilbur, and probably had no chess books to read. If he even <could> read, that is - a shocking number of horses are illiterate. And no Internet. |

 | | OBIT: <FSR> Mr. Ed most certainly could read, as well as showing keen insight into the commodities markets. See the opening scene in the following episode: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=__on...
Without doubt, Ed had the analytic mind for chess. The problem had to be his owner - that cheapskate Wilbur probably refused to pony up (ha, pun!) for a subscription to Chess Informant. |

 | | FSR: <OBIT: ... Without doubt, Ed had the analytic mind for chess. The problem had to be his owner - that cheapskate Wilbur probably refused to pony up (ha, pun!) for a subscription to Chess Informant.> The last Mr. Ed episode aired on February 6, 1966. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mister... Coincidentally(?), Chess Informant debuted in the same year. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chess_... Mr. Ed probably was unable to get his hooves on a copy of Chess Informant before his eponymous TV series ended. Another possibility, though, is that Mr. Ed <did> read the inaugural issue of Informant and decided he needed to end his TV series in order to devote his full attention to chess. To paraphrase Garry Kasparov, "We (including Mr. Ed) are all children of Informant." |

 | | tpstar: There was talk about a chess match between Mr. Ed and a famous racehorse but nobody would pony up the funds. It's too bad - the audience would have been stuck like glue. OK I'll stop there.
<Bezlitosci> Welcome to the site. =) I could not track down the answer to your question. Notable games for each player are based on how many times they are included in members' Game Collections, but I don't remember how they decide which Game Collections go on the player page. Giri is a very promising talent, so keep working on your project anyway. =) <tonsillolith> The Free Internet Chess Server is the best for online play, at least until this site gets it together. For unrated guest play, there is virtually no cheating. I said virtually. ;>D |

 | | HeMateMe: I saw this french film the other night; pretty good. <Queen to Play> <http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1082009/> Has a lot of chess scenes, including a blindfold KGA. About one-half of the film is set in front of a chessboard. This woman who cleans hotel rooms gets addicted to chess after watching american Kevin Kline play. Chess is a sort of vehicle by which this woman gains entry to a better educated, perhaps wealthier set of people. In this film the chess patrons are depicted as those who have means and live well (we know the reality is often different). This film might remind one of <Educating Rita> a film from the 80s about an East London working class girl who longs to better herself and not just be another baby machine. She studies English literature, tutored by the charming drunk Michael Caine, just as the chessplaying gal is tutored by the older, better educated Kevin Kline. |

| Jul-21-12 | | Wayne Proudlove: There's been alot of movie talk on here about guys like Deniro and Pacino but what about a man like Eric Braeden who has grinded it out daily for 26 years as Victor Newman on "Young and Restless"?
Y&R website describes Victor as "loving and protective toward family and loved ones, but if crossed, or if Victor feels that one is not living up to one's full potential then he can more than live up to the adjective that many have used to describe him--ruthless."
I'm not a soap fan but I've admired Eric's work ocassionally for many years. |

Archbishop and Bishop Respond to Tragedy
By Ann Schneible
DENVER, JULY 20, 2012 (Zenit.org).-> In statement released after this morning's deadly shooting at a Colorado cinema, Archbishop Samuel Aquila and Bishop James Conley expressed solidarity with the victims and their families.>A masked gunman attacked moviegoers at an Aurora, Colorado, cinema early this morning at a midnight showing of the latest Batman film, "The Dark Knight Rises."> According to the most recent reports, at least a dozen people were killed and many more wounded in the rampage. It is the worst such shooting in Colorado since the Columbine High School shooting in 1999 where 12 students and a teacher were killed by two armed teenagers.>In a statement released hours after the attack, Archbishop h Aquila, who was just installed as the Denver prelate this week, and Bishop Conley said that they are "shocked and saddened by this tragedy. Our hearts and prayers go out to those impacted by this evil act."> The archdiocese is offering counseling services for those who have been affected by the shooting through Regina Caeli Counseling services, which is affiliated with Catholic Charities.> "We stand in solidarity with our brothers and sisters cast into that darkness," the prelates said in their statement. "They do not stand alone. As Catholic bishops, we 'weep with those who weep.'"> For those who were killed in the attack, the bishop and archbishop commended " their souls, and their families and friends, to God’s enduring love."> The archbishop and bishop also spoke to those who survived the attack, but are suffering physical, emotional, or spiritual wounds. "To them we offer our prayers, our ears to listen, and our hearts to love. The road to recovery may be long, but in hope we are granted the gift of new life."> Archbishop Aquila and Bishop Conley called for prayers for the conversion of the shooter."Evil ruled his heart last night," they said. "Only Jesus Christ can overcome the darkness of such evil."> "We hope that all of us may find the peace which surpasses understanding."> |
