 | | HeMateMe: <While touring with the production, television writer and producer Lear contacted Hemsley to play the role of Jefferson on his new sitcom, All in the Family. Hemsley hesitated to accept but Lear held the role open for him and two years later, Hemsley joined the cast. Less than two years after Hemsley made his television debut, he and All in the Family costar Isabel Sanford were given their own spin-off in The Jeffersons. The series earned Hemsley Emmy and Golden Globe nominations in 1984 and 1985 respectively.

Why do you suppose Sherman Helmsley didn't jump at the offer to be part of a Norman Lear TV show, immediately upon being asked?. Lear was the hottest producer in television, delivering hits like "All In the Family" and "Sanford and Son", among others. I do remember watching All in the Family when it originally ran, and initially there was a different fellow playing the sort of angry, oppressed black guy v. the Archie Bunker character. When Sherman Helmsley came in, the character immediately got more time, his duels with Bunker were a mainstay of the show. One of the best moments (among many) was when the Bunkers were struggling to make ends meet in the heavy recession early 70s, and Archie's wife edith (Jean Stapleton) takes a low paying job as a clerk in a dry cleaning store owned by the George Jefferson, the black guy who always quarelled with Archie Bunker. Archie was less than happy about the situation. The show ran too long, and got stale, but for about four years it was one of the best things on TV. One Xmas someone gave me a huge button with a picture of Carrol O'Connor on it (dressed as Bunker) with the words "Vote for Archie--there's a little bit of him in everyone!" I suppose now the maker would get sued, because the button is not P.C. |

 | | HeMateMe: Speaking of 70s actors passing on, favorite TV surgeon Joe Gannon (Chad Everet) dies at age 75: <http://tv.yahoo.com/news/medical-ce...> I always liked <Medical Center>, good actors, good script ideas. Also, when it ran in the 70s, I think it was the only medical themed [drama] television show on in prime time, unlike now, when you have 45 medical dramas running, first run or in reruns. It's just overkill--Do we really need to know that the ME deduced the killer by dissolving the victims toenails in an acidic solution? Back in the day, Medical Center suceeded sappy shows like <Marcus Welby, M.D.> They had good story lines, like doctors who were addicted to meds, nurses who fought against corrupt physicians, Chad Everett performing a sex change operation on Robert Reed (Mr. Brady, from the Brady Bunch). Somehow, I'd like to think that the good natured Chad Everett and Alan Alda inspired a future corp of doctors. |

 | | Travis Bickle: <technical draw> What's your point? I saw Marlon Brando talking on The Larry King show years ago say that Hollywood is owned by the Jews, run by the Jews and all the actors are Jewish. Larry King thought Marlon Brando was Jewish, but Brandon said he wasn't but that living in New York was around Jewish culture. |
