Jul-25-04  vonKrolock: Pretty "White to Play and Win" conclusion after Black's 27-th move - However, about the game as a whole: the hybrid defense introduced by the veteran Maróczy is not completely harmless - Engels, then in his prime, make some concessions to conquer exchange plus advanced passed Pawn; but only a mistake (27...Nb6??) decides the issue: we had a playable game whith 27...Nf6!, for instance: 28.Qb4 Bd4 29.Qxb7 Qc6!, and when 'd6' falls, Black would be no longer in danger of losing the day, even the exchange down
Oct-02-04  Helloween: I found today's puzzle to be surprisingly easy, especially for a Saturday puzzle. The idea of 28.Rxb2 deflecting the Queen to make 29.Qxc8+ and thus 30.d7 possible jumped out at me immediately. I doubt I'm the only one. This was a Tuesday-caliber puzzle.
Oct-02-04  EXIDE: Excellent ending. Missed this one! was thinking of 28. Bxp:BxB 29. RxN and so on. By the way of information can anyone tell me what is " advanced chess." (reference, Quote of the Day)
Oct-02-04  Chesspatch: The beauty of this is the pawn have two options of Queening, d8 and c8. And <Helloween>, surprisingly, I didn't get it. I saw the individual moves but not the whole combination. I was settling for Qxc8 and THEN, Rxb2.
Oct-02-04  Dudley: I quickly saw 28.QxR+ NxQ 29. d7 Qc7 30. dxN Qxc8 31.RxB with three pieces for the queen. Right idea, wrong move order.
Oct-02-04  iron maiden: <Helloween> It probably wasn't Saturday-caliber, but it's definitely a touch above Tuesday difficulty. A lot of people might miss the idea that neither the knight nor the queen can stop the pawn.

Benzol: I have seen this one before. I found it difficult to spot the first time I came across it.

Gypsy: Very nice combo! I found it guite readily, but, of course, it helped a lot to know the going tactical theme.
Oct-02-04  Dick Brain: The goal of attaining a White pawn at d7 and Black knight at c8 where Black has no way to guard the back rank will be obvious to anyone who solves this sort of puzzle regularly. It's a classic combination finish.
Oct-02-04  derbyc: <EXIDE> Advanced chess is when humans - beside their brains - use computers as well. Google is our friend, I've found in the first hit of "Advanced Chess" this: http://www.chessbase.com/events/eve...

kevin86: Strange, black has a queen, but is unable to stop white's pawn from marching in.White is a rook ahead when the smoke clears.
Oct-02-04  dac1990: And when it does clear, say 30... Nb6 or Na7, 31. d8=Q+ Kh7 32. Qe7, the threats of 33. Bxe5 and 33. Qxf7+ are way, way too much. White probably won't even need his extra rook.
Oct-02-04  ruylopez900: Amazing, I got this! Fells good to get a puzzle like this right after taking a 1 month break from serious chess!
Oct-02-04  Knight13: I though it was 28. d7 Nxd7 29. Qxd7, winning a piece.
Oct-03-04  vonKrolock: <Knight13> Why 28...Nxd7?? Black would simply play 28...Rd8! etc

chancho: 28.Rxb2 a helluva move that deflects the Black Queen from defending the c8 Rook. After 30.d7, there is no way to stop the pawn from Queening.

Phony Benoni: Those of "a certain age" will recall this from Chernev & Reinfeld's <Fireside Book of Chess>. Their comment, before 28.Rxb2: <In spite of all the obstacles to the forward advance of White's d-pawn, it is still a passed pawn, and White thinks accordingly."> Then, at the end: <Lo and behold! There are no obstacles!>

Phony Benoni: Oops. I sort of gave this one away on Tuesday, didn't I?
Jan-19-12  mohannagappan: 28.Rxb2 Qxb2 29.Qxc8+ Nxc8 30.d7 -d pawn will be promoted Q and Black Queen with knight will lose against white queen,R+B
Jan-19-12  LoveThatJoker: 28. Rxb2! is massively advantageous for White, for if Black recaptures the Rook with 28...Qxb2 29. Qxc8+! Nxc8 30. d7 and the pawn will Queen on the next move.

Note that after 28...Qc1 (praying for 29. Rxc1?? Rxc1+ mating) White has 29. Rxb6 winning even more material.

LTJ

Jan-19-12  BadKnight: 1.Rxb2 Qxb2 2.Qxc8 Nxc8 3.d7 and white promotes the pawn to queen on the next move as black can not prevent two queening squares, c8 and d8. the puzzle looks very similar to last tuesday's puzzle. pawn promotion is the theme of the week!
