Stahlberg wasted won R+P vs R+P endgame by 58.Kc4??

If 58.b7! then Black has no chance. ! after move = the only winning move.

58...Rb8 59.Kc4! Ka3 60.Re7! f3 61.Rf7! f2 62.Rf3! Kb2 63.Rf2! Ka3 64.Rf7

58...Ka5 59.Rb1! Rb8 60.Kc4 Ka6 (60...f3 61.Kd5 f2 62.Kc6 Ka6 63.Kc7)61.Kc5! f3 62.Kc6 Ka5 63.Kc7

It all hangs together because of White threatening mate, of course.

Gypsy: Thanks <Poohavez>, these variations are great--excellent food-for-thought! I am particular especially to the first variation, where the Black king crowds the south border and White thus can not realy profit from Rb1. That variation is outright delicious! (Keeping with the food-for-thought metaphor. ;-))

Calli: How about 58...Rb8 59.Kc4! Ka3 60.Re7 Kb2? Going to the Kingside if White's king proceeds to c7 or going to b6 if White goes after the Black pawn.
Jul-11-04   Poohavez: <Calli> Oh my ears and whiskers!!! I will be back!
