  plang: 16 Ba2 was a new move; 16 Ng5 and 16 Bg5 had been played previously. Karpov thought that White would have had a slight pull after 18..Bxg5 19 Qxg5. 24..Be4 25 Re3..Qd6 26 Bxf7!..Kxf7 27 Rxe4..Kg7 28 Qe1 would have been good for White. With 32..Qb3 Karpov obtained enough counterplay to secure a draw.
