plang: Korchnoi often acoids mainline theory; 5 Bd2 has been used by him on occasion. He has even tried the clever 5 Na4!?. 16 Qc3 was new; 16 Ne3 had been played in I.Sokolov-Atalik New York 1997. 16..a6? was an error; better was 16..b6 17 Ne3 with a small edge for White. Korchnoi avoided 23 f3?..Na4; instead, after his powerful 23 Qb4! his advantage increased significantly.

<s4life: 26.. g4???? I can't believe a GM played that move...> Seirawan on 26..g4?!: "The threat of opening the h-file is greater than its execution. The text doesn't really help, but I have no suggestions either."

One variation illustrating White's attacking potential is 36..Nc4 37 Bxc4..Rxc4 38 Nxh5..Rc3 39 Nxf6+..Kh8 40 Rh6+..Kg7 41 Rg1+..Kxh6 42 Rg6#.
