  fm avari viraf: There is no tome for Black to play Qa3 as White mates to 2 moves with Qf7+ Kd8 & Qxd7#. If 23... Kd8 24.Qxf8+ Kc7 25.Rxd7+ Kxd7 [otherwise mates in 1] 26.Qxb8 Qa3 27.Bb5+ Ke7 28.Qc7+ Kf8 29.Qd8+ Kg7 30.Rg1+ Kh6 31.Qxf6+ and mates next move or 29...Kf7 30.Be8+ Kg7 31.Rg1+ leads to previous variation whereas 29...Kf8 30.Bh5+ Kg7 31.Rg1+ Kh6 and White mates in 2 moves. Hence Black's resignation!
Feb-18-07  zinos: What if black plays 18...d4? Cab white stop mate?

  fm avari viraf: <zinos> It seems to me 18...d4 White would try 19.fxg7 Qa3 20.Bxh7+ Kxh7 21.Qh5+ Kg8 22.gxf8=Q+ if ...Rxf8 23.Qg6# if 22...Bxf8 23.Qg6+ Bg7 and 24.Qxg7# the only move 22...Kxf8 23.Qh6+ Ke8 24.Qc1 avoiding mate on b2.

Here <15...b4> was the beginning of the end. 15...h5, 15...Be8 or 15...Ne8 would have been better.

Mar-30-09  whiteshark: <13...Rae8> was noteworthy.

Mar-30-09  whiteshark: Another good plan for Black was <12...Nb4> to exchange ♗d3.

Feb-18-10  mertangili: if 21...Qa3 white mates with 22. Qg8+ Ke7 23. Rg7+ Kd6 24. Qxb8+ Kc6 25. Bb5#.

Which is ap pretty combination and it took me some time to figure out.

Nov-25-20  schnarre: ...The inability for Black to play Qa3 was the proverbial taunting of the damned--victory in sight, but unable to act upon it due to White's own victory march.
