Calli: Pretty exciting game. Alekhine goes the wrong way with his king on 31...Kd7 and winds up blocking his own rooks with 32...Kc6

meloncio: Some years ago I read a story about this game. It was the last round and Alekhine would win the tournament anyway, so he and others young players had the night before a "long night" of drinks and dance. They finished the big party watching the sunrise on the beach.

What a wonderful life then for Alekhine! He was young, handsome, rich and a superb chessplayer. Who could think how his life would change in only a few years? It's just a melancholic thought.

Of course a hung-over Alekhine lost his game (this one) the next day. I don't remember where I read it. Maybe Edward Lasker's Memories?

Phony Benoni: Yes, it's an Edward Lasker story. He recounts that he was also one of the celebrants and did not fare well the last round either.

Certainly Alekhine played the opening like someone who was feeling no pain. And he still almost pulled it out!

Apr-21-09  vonKrolock: <19.e4> Just after the showy combination for winning the Q , Janowski gives away this important P... maybe he was not liking lines with 19.Qd3 c4 etc, but Alekhine, on the other side, obtains now the extra breath for a longer resistance...
