Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-04-04  Green Bishop: A sensational draw from former prodigy child Pomar against the World Champion. Alekhine tried to avoid a draw against his 12 years old opponent and made serius mistakes. Pomar had the victory with: 61...Rdd2 62. Rc6, Rhe2 etc. (Pablo Morán, LOS NIñOS PRODIGIO DEL AJEDREZ)

Gregor Samsa Mendel: Alekhine also could have lost as a result of 45 Ke1, which he played to avoid a draw by repetition--although he later instigates a repetition of moves to end the game. With 45...Nb7, threatening ...Nc5 and ...Nd3+, Pomar would have obtained a winning advantage.

This is a fascinating game. An aging Alekhine shows signs of his old brilliance combined with reckless overreaching in his efforts to win; young Pomar displays moments of coolness under pressure alternating with errors obviously caused by fear of his renowned opponent. It deserves further commentary.

Mar-17-07  setebos: Was Alekhine having shots of Amontillado as he played this game?
Sep-01-07  reztap: I played against Pomar in a clock simul in the early fifties.I think their was six of us. He gave up one or two draws. I was crushed like a grape.

alexmagnus: They say by virtue of this draw Salamanca is <still> the youngest player to score something (that is, to play and not to lose) against a reigning world champion.
