Kibitzer's Corner
< Earlier Kibitzing  · PAGE 2 OF 2 ·  Later Kibitzing >
Oct-31-05   JamesBath: A game where Gazz could well have
resigned after ten moves. I would
still vote these two's '91 encounter
- the 'corner cringing game' as
Gazz's most humiliating defeat ever.
Not suprisingly, only Chuck could
administer it.
Oct-31-05   madserg: Why 9... e5, when Garry already has played g6? That was theoretical until that game?
Jan-05-06   aerohacedor: Had Ivanchuck played 14. Ne7 instead of b4, it would have been an easy mate.
Jan-05-06   likestofork: Plus, if Ivanchuk had played 14. Ne7, he would have delivered mate without taking his king out of check. I think that's termed an illegal move.

If you're wanting to do illegal things, at least have a good (good as in highly skilled, not necessarily morally above reproach) lawyer on your side.

notyetagm: Kasparov must have been pissed after this game.

13 Nd5! is a nasty <double attack>, threatening both 14 NxQ and the <Blackburne's Other Mate> 14 Ne7#. Black has no satisfactory way to counter both of these threats.

May-26-06   iWaNnAbAgM: I can't believe Kasparov lost playing the Sicilian Najdorf it's his favorit opening.

plang: I don't think anyone expects to go undefeated with the Najdorf including Fischer and Kasparov.
May-26-06   iWaNnAbAgM: Fischer playes the Najdorf?wow that i would like to see.

dakgootje: 11. Bh6 is indeed quite a nice move! Agree that 0-0 seems better as this continuation obviously doesnt do much good to black
Jun-11-06   question marks: <iwannabagm> Fischer playing the Najdorf? There are only 77 examples in the database... http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches...
Sep-19-06   sfm: <lordhazol: 11-Bh6 astonished Kasparov.11-...0-0 was better?> No, as there is BxB and QxS+...
Feb-24-07   Kapablanca: <I can't believe Kasparov lost playing the Sicilian Najdorf it's his favorit opening.>

In 13 mere moves... Add to that.

Yes: he had to be pissed of right after that.

Jul-20-07   Squares: My favourite game! What an onslaught delivered from the bishop offering! Ivanchuk, from what I have read and seen with my infinite (I count hve spelt that wrong) wisdom could have been even better than he turned out.
Aug-04-07   alexandrovm: playing with defficit for the most part of the game...you beat Kaspa was pissed during and after the game

whiteshark: Black missed excellent resigning chances!
Aug-08-07   geigermuller: <aerohacedor: Had Ivanchuck played 14. Ne7 instead of b4, it would have been an easy mate.> b4 is best to shelter the white king, attack the Q and make Ne7 possible

Billy Vaughan: <whiteshark>LOL, I bet Kaspy just didn't want the ignominy of losing in, like, 13 moves. Amazing game!

hedgeh0g: It's very rare to see a GM lose his queen within 15 moves and Kasparov no less! Something only Ivanchuk could pull off.
Mar-23-08   Paraconti: Why not 11...0-0?
Mar-23-08   eyalbd: "You insulted me in the opening therefore I will insult you back by playing till the mate"

I am sure that was in Kasparov's mind during the game.

Mar-23-08   thegreatzidane: 11 ...0-0 12. Bxg7 Kxg7 13. Qxf6+ Kxf6 14. Nd5+ and loses the queen.
Apr-16-08   The Rocket: was this classical chess?, from what I know ivanchuk beat kasparov 4 times in classical chess, is that correct?.

Stuckman: It's pretty obvious Kasparov accidentally ate a brownie from a local bakery before the game, forgetting that he was in Amsterdam. Ha ha, okay, bad joke.
