Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-02-05  ajit: Anand's black knight begins a crusade to win the game on move 31....Nxe5. And then plays by itself...literally. For instance, the knight's movements are 33...Nc4, 36...Nd2,37...Nxe4 (when the game becomes ).

But then comes the problem of finishing against arguably the strongest positional player. That calls for absolutely perfect technique.

The same knight answers the call and after some baffling movements beginning with 44...Nd7, 46...Nxc5,49...Nd7,50...Nf6,51...Ne8, 52...Nd6, 54...Nc4+, game over!

May-24-08  sheaf: I wonder how this game received so less attention, masterly technique by vishy, anand wins a pawn and then converts it into a winning advantage.. Its a game, I am pretty sure , belongs lekos book of his favorite anands games.

sallom89: high quality game, i agree with you <sheaf> this game deserve more attention.
Sep-30-08  Brown: In the database here, Karpov has played this line (D45) as white 54 times, against the best players, in simuls, rapids, etc.

His record is a staggering 27 wins, 26 draws and 1 loss.

Including this game, Karpov is +2 -1 =6 vs Anand in this line.

Mar-30-11  offramp: Here is a real oddity, and a small mystery.
This is the position after 18.Rfe1.

Check It Out: Nice find, offramp.
May-18-11  ColdSong: Far from being Anand's most commented game but a masterpiece indeed. No less than Karpov is slowly but surely outplayed in his own style by one of the new generation's most promising star.Sadly,it's around these years that Karpov began to lose more often, decided (or not)that it was enough and left the chess top. That's life...

perfidious: <ColdSong> This was the year Karpov turned 40, and he already had a lifetime of top-level play behind him.

While he's never been a personal favourite, he was a great champion by any measure.

May-19-11  Jim Bartle: Well, just the previous year Karpov had lost a WC match to Kasparov by 12.5-11.5, and he did come back to defeat Anand in this match.
Sep-13-11  voyager39: Karpov got a taste of the cavalry 20 years before Kramnik actually said it!
