Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-18-02  bishop: Anderssen is not his usual self in this game. 8...Nf6 does not look good at all, ...h6 seems to be a better move.
Aug-21-03  Blumster: seems to me that Morphy is not himself either, the master of the sacrifice missed a great knight sac: perhaps 8.Nxg5 would be better than d4. If 8. ... Qxg5 then 9. Bf7+ Kd8 10.Bxg8 and thus white is up two pawns and has still prevented Blacks chances of castling. Granted white accomplishes all of this eventually, still, this is a very viable option. If you ask me I feel Anderssen should have resigned after move seven, and probably didn't only to save himself the embarrasment.

  Honza Cervenka: <Blumster> What about 8.Nxg5 Qxg5 9.Bf7+ Kf8?
Aug-21-03  ksadler: <Honza> I'd figure that you'd then have to play 10. d4. I agree with Blumster that the Knight sac would have been in Morphy's character: saccing pieces to open even more pieces for attack on f7.

Honza Cervenka: <ksadler> I think that 10.d4 Na5 is quite good reason for not to play 8.Nxg5.
Aug-21-03  ksadler: Yes, it seems that there isn't much there once the Queen is forced off the a2-f7 diagonal.
Dec-01-05  Chopin: Whenever Morphy beat Anderssen, he simply destroyed him.
Feb-06-07  Themofro: How about
8 Nxg5 Qxg5
9 Bxf7 Kf8
10 Bxf4 Q (wherever)
11 Bxd6+ cxd6
12 Bxg8+ which i think shold win.

This is all just in my head, but i think white's won here, comments or refutations?

Feb-06-07  IMDONE4: <Themofro> in your variation, u assume that the pawn is already on d4, because the bishop cant take the pawn on f4 unless the d pawn moved (which was on move 8).
Feb-07-07  Themofro: <IMDONE4> Your'e right, lol, was thinking of the combination after Morphy's move, sigh, chess would be so much easier if you could move twice in a row wouldn't it? I still think that line would have won though if it could have been played.
Nov-12-08  gambitfan: < bishop: Anderssen is not his usual self in this game. 8...Nf6 does not look good at all, ...h6 seems to be a better move. >

I am having a look !

Jan-21-09  WhiteRook48: I'm thinking maybe 8...Nh6 might work.
Jul-10-10  soothsayer8: Why the bishop sac 12...Bh3 ? it looks to me like Anderssen didn't look at that line close enough.
Feb-25-11  Llawdogg: Cut them both some slack. This was a casual game played after the big match to kill some time while waiting for a photographer to take their picture.
Feb-25-11  M.D. Wilson: Morphy was much better than Anderssen, but the match result was really lopsided for a player of Anderssen's strength.
