Aug-21-04  lao tzu: 21.Nxe5!...and u guys say Ulf is positional/safe!?
Nxe5 is an amazing concept...imo
Aug-21-04  Everett: This is one of the most closed Sicilian positions I've seen, and is certainly slower/safer/more positional than 3.d4.

Further, Ulf does play it safe lao tzu. Like any grandmaster, he knows his tactics, but is usually preventing others from using them on him, rather than the reverse.

Of course, as in this game, if the opportunity arises, he knows how to bring the point home.

21...Qxe5 Qf3+
21...Kxe5 Bb2+

Aug-21-04  lao tzu: Everett- if 21...Kxe5 22. Bb2+? Rxb2
Ulf probably had 22. f4+ in mind if
btw- i've watched Ulf play over the net for a while now- and his ideas are sterling, almost always extraordinary, even exciting- i'd have say he's not just a counter-puncher but a very great combination player as well..perhaps i need to look over more of his games here..wouldnt be the first time i was wrong : )
Sep-04-04  Everett: lao tzu, my mistake. I first saw 22.f4+ but then saw that Bb2 would be mate, but didn't see that the rook could take it! Whoops.

Ulf is great, no doubt. Has been playing forever, too. Chessgames used to have a list of his Bogo-Indians as black. Sure you could come up with that on your own through the advanced search. Great player.

Mateo: 21.Nxe5! was a nice combination. If 21...Kxe5, you have something very aesthetic: 22.f4+! Kxf4 23.Qd2+ Ke5 24.Qc3+ Kf4 25.Bc1 mate. I like the way the King moves: e5-f4-e5-f4 until the end.
