| themindset: obviously the computer was out of book somewhere between the 8th and 11th move, playing g3 only to play e2 and castle kingside? only a computer would do that. |

| Marvol: <An Englishmman> This is not a highly tactical game - it is strategic and revolves around the weakness of the open h-file.
Check some of Eduard Nemeth s games
like this one E Nemeth vs Shredder, 2000 to see how computers handle half-open h-files. -Correction, how computers mishandle half-open h-files |

| Marvol: What's with the 16 Qc2?
Why not exchange on f4 a few times? What do I miss after 16 Bxf4, Bxf4 17 Qxf4. ? |

| white pawn: I am curious about chess computers. Have the people that program them always given them a "book" of openings, or just for kicks, have they ever let computers come up with opening variations on their own? |

| mynameisrandy: Crazy! Cool! |

| azaris: <white pawn> Yes, computers have sometimes been made to play their own openings. The result is stuff like 1. e4 Nc6 and pointless pawn pushing. It looks like skittles night at the talentless juniors chess club. At least the computers never play the Grob. |

Well, I can remember about a year ago making Fritz play without opening books and it either played The Scandinavian or the Alekhines defense practically everytime against e4. Against d4 we'd always have a Slav.c4 or Nf3 I don't remember, I hardly play them anyway. <azaris>
Enlighten me on this "Grob" |

| skygod68: The Grob opening is 1. g4
Pretty horrible opening. |

| kevin86: 1g4 is aso called "The Spike"-maybe because it is a big dog. I guess it would be ok-if you don't castle on the king side. It's like Admiral Byrd sleeping on the North Pole with his windows open. Nice scheme by white to delay the mate. |

| patzer2: Black's 17...Rxh4! initiates a winning attack on White's weakened kingside. After 18.gxh4 Qxh4 19.Bxg4 Qxg4+ 20.Kh1 Ke7–+, Black has a quick mate ready. Black's winning technique was effiecient enough, but I also like the flashy 19...Rh1+! 20.Kxh1 Rh8+ 21.Kg2 Rh2+ 22.Kf3 Nxf2! 23.Bxf4 Bxf4 24.gxf4 Rh3+ 25.Kxf2 Qg3# |

| Hinchliffe: This is quite possibly the weakest compter play I have seen. The queen sac followed by the bishop sac are absolutely piontless from white's perspective and achiev nothing other than a hopeless end game position.I cannot fathom how the computer imagined(if that is the correct term) that it would gain anything from throwing away piece after piece on a non existing attack. The h file attack needed to be addressed and the computer throws caution to the wind and blithely continues on a meaningless attack which doesn't even create a pawn situation of merit. Altogether an extremely disappionting display of computer inadequacy. Bravo the human being. I shall miss Kasparov very much but take comfort in the enormous legacy his games and approach to chess has left us all. |

A pretty interesting piece of a crap. |

| Marvol: <Saruman>
Ah yes, losing the f-pawn would have been disastrous! Especially since white was only one pawn up at that time.
It was far better for white to get himself mated in a devastating manner losing only some pieces in the process... :-S |
