Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-18-14  Howard: This game took place in the last round of the 1983 World Open, and it proved costly to Benjamin.
Mar-10-15  ASchultz: So it wasn't just all about that bass. It was all about the Benjamins, too! (Apologies to the pun creator if this was part of the joke. Maybe other people will miss it.)
Mar-10-15  RookFile: I remember Patrick Wolff saying the Benko isn't so much fun when white plays Bd2 and Bc3, and it's bye-bye bishop on g7. In this game, it more or less amounts to the same thing when black trades off the bishop on b2. In fact, it's even worse, because white keeps his dark squared bishop, and black is weak on the dark squares.

FSR: This win propelled Bass into a five-way tie for first. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World... But given that Spraggett's name is in bold, I assume he won on Armageddon or some other sort of tiebreak.
Mar-10-15  TheaN: For those wondering how this would end, it's pretty much forced <53....f6 54.Qg6+ Kh8 (Kf8/Qg7 55.Rxh7 ) 55.Qxf6+> winning the crucial f-pawn <55....Kg8 (Qg7 56.Rxh7+) 56.Qg6+ Kh8 57.Rxh7+ Qxh7 58.Qxh7+ Kxh7 59.g5 > black cannot reach the two passed pawns and the endgame win is trivial.
Mar-10-15  whiteshark: Bass, Bass, we need Bass
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0qnD... ;)
Mar-10-15  Howard: Bass and I both lived in Wisconsin back in '84, and I met him once at a tournament. Then, coincidentally, we both moved to Ohio in '86 or '87, and I met him again.

What's he doing nowadays ?

Mar-10-15  kevin86: Time for some Bass Fishing!

TheAlchemist: Oh, no, isn't torture enough that I have to hear it everyday on the radio at least 5 times. <cg.com>, have mercy :-)
Mar-10-15  Howard: If I remember the Chess Life coverage of that tournament correctly, an attempted bank robbery actually took place right across the street from the venue ! A man and a woman tried to knock over a bank, but the man did was shot to death by the police, and the woman was taken into custody.

The article stated that a bunch of players were gathered at a window, watching the action outside.

Mar-10-15  Howard: According to CL, Bass had a clear edge after only about 15 moves. So where did Benjamin go wrong in the opening ?
Mar-10-15  morfishine: FWIW: The surname 'Bass' is pronounced like 'pass', 'mass', or 'ass', which coincidentally is what the song is about.

Since the word 'Bass' in the song title is pronounced like 'race', 'pace', or 'deface', which ironically is what this pun-attempt does to this game, this is in fact, just another imbecilic attempt at wit that doesn't even reach the level of feeble word-play since the referenced words fail to meet the minimum requirement of at the very least, rhyming

The song is not "All about that fish"

What a joke

perfidious: Indeed it is 'Bass' as in the fish, which this player decidedly was not.

FSR: Yes, I have played Bass twice (and also knew his sister Elena) and it's definitely pronounced like the fish.
Mar-12-15  morfishine: On a positive note, I really enjoy Bass fishing
Sep-11-18  Howard: So, whatever happened to Bass?! Presumably, he doesn't push pawns anymore, or at least not at the professional level.
