  fred lennox: This game was lost by Mason on time as shown at J Mason vs Bird, 1882. Here, they play it out. Bird may of lost some fire. His moves at 38 and a bit beyond are weak.

  suenteus po 147: <fred lennox> As much as Mason deserves credit for winning a technically and officially lost game (never resign!), I give Bird as much credit (even more!) for insisting they play the game out. That's a true sportsman who is more interested in testing skill and mettle when there is no requirement to.
Jul-21-05   lentil: i read 'somewhere' that in those days, exceeding the time limit did not result in forfeit, but meant that the player had to pay a fine. can anybody confirm/refute this?
Feb-13-06   AlexanderMorphy: what a great game...although i'm not quite sure who actually won here...i 've heard that bird won on time yet why was this game continued?
