| Knight13: White's winning in the final position, NO!!??? And Baird just agrees to a draw? Are you kidding... |

| FSR: I am even more confused than you are. First, as you say, the final position is a dead win for White, so why would Baird agree to a draw? Second, as far as I can tell, this game was never played between these players. This tournament was a double round-robin; bizarrely, draws played in the first round counted, but a draw played in the second round did not count, and was replayed; if the second game in the second round was also a draw, that counted. To add further confusion, btw, David Graham Baird, this player's brother, also played. Bird-J.W. Baird (this Baird) in the first round was a KGD, drawn (which counted). In the second round, Bird as Black played a Dragon Sicilian - draw, but not counted. In the replay game, Bird met Baird's Ruy Lopez with a Bird's Defense (of course), and was crushed. So as best I can tell, this game did not occur between these players. See pp. 421-23 of the tournament book - http://tinyurl.com/5hkavo |
