HeMateMe: Blackburne appears to be playing the Evans gambit, in 1872. I wonder why the opening is named after Larry Evans, a USA champion of the 1950s?
May-23-12  King Death: <HMM> Are you serious, have you ever heard of Wiiliam Davies Evans? If you aren't joking here's a little info. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Willia...

A miracle in this game was that Steinitz won playing the Compromised Defense even though he loved to grab material and hang on.

HeMateMe: Honest, I read somewhere that it was championed by Fischer contemporary Larry Evans.
May-23-12  papiros34: Blackburne should have won at move 41.
When Steinitz moved his king to f7,

HeMateMe: In the book "The Innovators", the author mentions that Steinitz beat Blackburne 7-0 in a match, or it was 7-0 at one of those very long tournaments that used to take place, in London or on the Continent.

It was a match. Here's the score thanks to some more great work by <Benzol> Game Collection: WCC Index [ Steinitz - Blackburne 1876 ].
