tpstar: In the Ruy Lopez with a4, I wonder if there's a rule of thumb when Black should recapture ... Bxa8 versus ... Qxa8. I prefer to leave to Queen on d8 to support ... d5, and I'm not sure how much the Queen can do on the open a file.

WWGZ-tpstar (FICS 3/10/06): 1. e4 e5 2. Nf3 Nc6 3. Bb5 a6 4. Ba4 Nf6 5. d3 b5 6. Bb3 Be7 7. a4 Bb7 8. c3 0-0 9. 0-0 d5 10. ab ab 11. Rxa8 Bxa8 12. ed Nxd5 13. Bxd5 (13. Re1 Bd6) Qxd5 14. Qe2 Rd8 15. Be3? Qxd3 and Black won (0-1).
