  sleepyirv: Uhh... isn't 28.Ne7 Kh8 29.Qh4# the quickest mate?

parisattack: I suspect this was prepared analyis by Botvinnik, as Keres liked ...Bc5 in the Reverse Sicilian English. Anyone have game backgrounder?

Botvinnik played some of his finest games after losing the World Championship.

Jun-04-09  totololo: It was known that Nothing could infurate Botvinnik more then a carelessly sacrifice .... I'll show you!

So , he constructed nicely , in the closed position , the final combination. Look how Nd5 and Be3 control the black squares on the diagonal d8-h4. The queen moved d2-f2 innocently. A little pawn went to g6. Nothing important ....

Opening the B column , the final blow Rb8 and everything play the black TE DEUM!

Jun-05-09  sfm: Seems that Black should not have played 24.-,Ra7 ?
Jun-06-09  ski: i know it's a couple of years late, but the king move to g1 was probably done simply to get the king off of the black bishop's diagonal. in any event, this is one of my favourite games Boty engineered.

Travis Bickle: I think Botvinnik played the most creative and precise English opening of any GM!

whiteshark: <exchangesacrifice: After Botvinnik had moved 27.Rb8, Keres fell from his chair.> Only metaphorically speaking, I hope.
Apr-07-10  James Bowman: Many players have commented on the lack of posts for a very deserving game and I concur.

Very focused play by Botvinnik after Keres's unsound sacrifice Mikail systematically disassembles blacks kingside and kills him with the pawn anchored on g6 and the knight on d5, the weakness is self inflicted but the taste of blood for whatever reason is all an apex predator needs.

This game was well after Botvinniks prime also but the old lion could still hunt.

Benzol: Shouldn't the pun be "I buried Paul" or was that "Cranberry Sauce".

Living is easy with eyes closed.

:)

Jul-09-10  The Rocket: Rb8 is a very nice move.

Stunned to find a Botvinnik game that he won without a queen exchange:=

NARC: After 26 moves, white has only one minor piece on the enemy side of the board, and still manages to finish off the opponent just like that.

taofelix: hello, everybody. i like very much your passion for chess. i would like you to consider that in ussr playing against botvinnik was like playing against stalin himself, i mean you would never feel equal , and psicologicaly it mattered. only those who lived there know the story, the rest of the world enjoy chess, the noble game (is it still considered to be?) forgive me my english, trying to do my best. my best wishes and admiration for gm's and nice guys playing chess. taofelix
Jul-09-10  KOCMOHAYT: no,paul is alive! An englishman living in germany predicted victories for Spain and Germany in last WC games. I wonder how successful would he be in chess predicting...

Honza Cervenka: 20...f6 was pretty bad and white could have played 21.g5! with decisive effect immediately, for example 21...fxg5 22.Bxd4 Nxd4 23.bxc5 dxc5 24.Ba4+ Bc6 25.Qh2 with numerous threats that are impossible to meet (25...Bxa4? 26.Qe5+ Kd7 27.Rf7+ leads to quick mate). Still Botvinniks play deserves big applause. He completely outplayed poor Paul in the opening. Black Knight sitting on d4 was a nicely looking sluggard in comparison with its white counterpart on d5. Instead of 20...f6 castling could have been a bit better but white's advantage is already apparent. Of course, final 27.Rb8 after 26...f5(?) but alternatives like 26...Be8 27.Qg1! with intention Qg4 and next Qh5 are not much better.

kevin86: White will do ANYTHING to remove the queen from her home diagonal-even give up a rook! The pawn is captured at h4 and mate is certain.
Jul-09-10  randomsac: What a finish. THe most awesome deflection I've seen in a while.

whiteshark: <taofelix> Thanks for your clarification - of course no hard feelings here.

Keres and Botwinnik have had a long 'relationship' over the board --> http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... and there is a little story from 1948 I posted here: Keres vs Botvinnik, 1948 :D

Jul-09-10  Starf1re: Ugh I don't know how any top ranked player could make a move like 20) f6
