AgentRgent: Wow, How many of us would see a mate in 5...

  AgentRgent: 34. Kg8 Rcg8+ 35. Kf8 Nd7+ 36. Ke8 Nf6+ and then either 37. Kf8 Rf7# or 37. Kd8 Rh8# Beautiful!
Nov-18-02  pawntificator: 37. Nf6+ isn't even necessary, as 37. Rh8# or Rg8#

AgentRgent: sorry, for some reason in my minds eye the rook was on f7..
Oct-10-03  rndapology: The bishop has to stick around and defend d7. So if 33...Be8 34.Nxe6 Rh5 35. Ng7

Or if 33...Ba4 34. b5

Nice mate...2 rooks against a lone king, with a peice controlling the square at the upperleft diagonal square of the rook that last gave check. These also work in crowded castled formations where the enemy king can't move left or right because of its own peice.

beenthere240: In playing this game, I completely missed 11. Bxb5 picking up a pawn and wrecking black's queenside play.
May-08-07  waddayaplay: If it makes you feel better, I did that too. But so did Taimanov, and he was rated among the twenty best of the world at that time.
Jun-15-07  MyriadChoices: Black seemed to be playing catch up from that point on. Bad bishop, positionally lost on the QS, etc. Still, great game.
Jun-15-07  iccsumant: Brilliant title for the GOTD! "Rook Who's Talking!"
Jun-15-07  unluckythirtyfive: I am appalled by this blatant racism towards orientals in the pun!
Jun-15-07  sfm: Move: 10,-,f6. Opponent: Bronstein. Wrong combination. And it's not just losing a pawn, the position is totally wreacked, with irreparable dark-square weaknesses. I like 15.e5! After 19.Nxb5! it is really over.
Jun-15-07  thunderhrom: oh...i get it...rook who's talking...look who's talking...now that is clever punning...

Jack Kerouac: David; you rook mah-velous....
Jun-15-07  Chicago Chess Man: <AgentRgent> not to take away from this awesome game but given the position after 33..Bf3 I think I would've found the mate rather easily. Two rooks on the seventh rank plus a knight on the sixth equals black is dead.
Jun-15-07  dabearsrock1010: 10..f6 seems like a bad blunder to me and on top of that it is not difficult to calculate and I dont understand why black would allow such a combination

Chessmensch: <unluckythirtyfive> This wasn't racist until you made it that way.

  kevin86: I saw a faster mate:

34...Kg8 35 Rcg8+ Kf8 36 Nd7+ Ke8 37 Rh8#-four moves instead of five. Pawntificator is correct.

Jun-15-07  schnarre: Black just gets discected here!

fm avari viraf: Bronstein,[with whom I have some sweet memories during the Challengers at Hastings, U.K.] simply outplays Taimanov in all the 3 phases of the game where the latter made a grave mistake on move 10...f6 which sealed his fate. Indeed, a lovely game with all that grace & power.
Jun-15-07  zb2cr: To pick a nit--both <AgentRGent> and <kevin86> wrote the line wrong--it should be 34. ... Kg8; 35. Rcg7+, Kf8; 36. Nd7+, Ke8; 37. Rh8#.

The Rooks are on the 7th, not the 8th!

A beautiful game by Bronstein.

Jun-15-07  khense: Actually the referee should have stopped the fight earlier.

technical draw: <I am appalled by this blatant racism towards orientals in the pun!> That's not racist! This is:

Dec-24-07  PAWNTOEFOUR: lol............that's why i don't analize a thing......i'll leave that up to folks much better qualified to do those things..........crafty comes up with mate in three
