Jul-21-04 | | iron maiden: This is the Game of the Day? It's appropriately titled, but... |
Jul-21-04 | | ThomYorke: This game was boring...I hoped something better in the game of the day |

 | | jaime gallegos: yeah, what happened chessgames.com ? is the tomorrow menu an stalemate and another boring game ? |
Jul-21-04 | | iron maiden: Maybe they're trying to draw a metaphor to actual chess; the games aren't always exciting. |

 | | Sneaky: There's actually a few things to be said about this game. The sequence starting with 14.Na3 is a twisty and winding road. I imagine that Kharlov must have seen the whole thing when he embarked upon it. For example, did you notice how 18...Ng6 prevents the classic bishop sacrifice 19.Bxh7+? Why not 15...Rxa1? Why not 16...cxd3? And in the final position, what would be White's next move to hold things together? |
Jul-21-04 | | themindset: whatever, it's still a boring game... acknowledged by the subtitle "bore us" i mean the french advance can *sometimes* be interesting, but as this game shows, it's often a borefest with white only managing the slightest of edge. |
Jul-21-04 | | Shadout Mapes: I agree with Sneaky, after 15...Rxa1 Nd6+ things get quite interesting. 16...cxd3 17.Ra8+ doesn't look good for black, though. |
Jul-21-04 | | waddayaplay: Hehe, I was thinking about Boris Karloff, the movie actor. I saw him in "The Terror" from 1963 with Jack Nicholson. He played in several Frankenstein films in the 30's and 40's. |
Jul-21-04 | | Benzol: His real name was William Henry Pratt.
Boris Karloff sounds a better name to play Frankenstein's Monster, however. |
Jul-21-04 | | Calchexas: Boris Karloff...pun's definitely more esoteric than the last few have been. |
Jul-21-04 | | Dillinger: I think this was a case where the pun was thought of first, perhaps at 3am, and then an appropriately boring game was found to suit it. |
Jul-21-04 | | kevin86: Draw!! An exciting word in a western, less so in chess. This game was a typical grandmaster draw-or Russian draw,to be less PC. Boris Karloff was best as a mad scientist in:THE MAN WITH NINE LIVES and THE MAN THEY COULD NOT HANG and of course, the grinch. |
Jul-21-04 | | Derek880: In Beating the French, by Gary Lane, he gives 15...Rxa1? a question mark with the following line: 16 Nd6+ Kf8 17 Ng5, and now he says that White is winning.
Also, after 16...cxd3, White has 17 Ra8+ Bc8 18 Qxd3, and White is up the exchange.
But, I agree, this is hardly "Game of the Day" material. |

 | | chessgames.com: <I think this was a case where the pun was thought of first> What do you mean? The pun is ALWAYS thought of first! ;-) |
Jul-21-04 | | Chesspatch: <Sneaky> I agree, Na3 is a nice twist. One which would have been discarded by most amateurs, me including. |
