Kibitzer's Corner
Oct-21-05  Dionyseus: Roman analyses this game in great detail in Roman's Lab: Mastering Chess Series volume 14. The combination beginning with 31.Rxg7 was named one of the most brilliant combinations of 1977, and was also included in Beliavsky's book. He says that 15 years after this game, it was concluded by grandmasters that 31...Kxg7 wins for black.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but it appears that they missed a forced perpetual. Shredder 9.1 says that after 31...Kxg7, white simply plays 32.Nd7+ Nd4 33.Bxd4+ cxd4 34.Qe5+ Kg8 35.Qg5+ Kh8 36.Qe5+ Kg8 37.Qg5+ Kh8 38.Qe5+ Kg8 draw by repitition.

If black plays 37...Kf7, white simply plays 38.Qf6+ Kg8 39.Qg5+ draw by repitition.

shakespeare: I have seen the combination as a puzzle on chess.com - I really dont know - impressive yes - but on several points easy to defend for black 31...Kxg7 or 31...Nxg7 - seems to be the same equal position 32...Rf5 followed by Rd4 and everything is blocked and safe
