Kibitzer's Corner
Jun-01-22  Brenin: Black is 2P down and in desperate trouble from the threat of Ra8+. My first thought was 38 ... Rxg3+ 39 fxg3 (otherwise mate) Qxd4+ 40 Kh1 Qxa7, regaining material equality, but this loses to 41 Qb4, with threats of Qf4+ and Qf8+. A second attempt was 38 ... Rb6, hoping for the swindle 39 Qxb6 Rxg3+ 40 fxg3 Qe3+, with a draw as in the game. However, White has 39 Raa1, e.g. Rxb3 40 Rxb3 Rxg3+ 41 Rxg3, retaining a slight advantage after 41 ... Qxb7.
Jun-01-22  Gregor Samsa Mendel: <Brenin>--My first thought was also 38..Rxg3+, but white can reply 39 Qxg3+.
Jun-01-22  Brenin: <Gregor Samsa Mendel: <Brenin>--My first thought was also 38..Rxg3+, but white can reply 39 Qxg3+> Oops! Good thing I rejected Rxg3+, even if for a completely wrong reason.
Jun-01-22  raymondhow: Took me awhile, but I did manage to solve. When I opened the game and inverted the board to get the Black perspective, was tipped off that I was looking for a draw when saw the "1/2-1/2" at top. I saw 38...Rb6 as the best hope, but then kept wanting to complete the trades on b6 before trying for the perpetual. Doesn't work that way. I came back after a break and saw the correct follow up, 39...Rxg3+.
Jun-01-22  raymondhow: < However, White has 39 Raa1... retaining a slight advantage > Didn't see that move at all, but still say I have the intended solve. Wednesdays have been tough lately...
Jun-01-22  mel gibson: Didn't see that.

Jun-01-22  agb2002: Black is two pawns down.

White threatens Ra8+.

The first idea that comes to mind, 38... Rxg3+, loses to 39.Qxg3+. This leads to 38... Rb6:

A) 39.Ra8+ Kxb7 40.Qxf7+ Kxa8 41.Ra1+ Ra6 wins.

B) 39.Qxb6 Rxg3+ (39... Rxb6 40.Rxb6 Qe1+ 41.Kg2 Qe4+ 42.Kh2)

B.1) 40.fxg3 Qe3+ achieves perpetual check.

B.2) 40.Kh2 Qg2#.

B.3) 40.Kf1 Qd3+ 41.Ke1 Rg1#.

C) 39.Raa1 Rxb3 40.Rxb3 Rxg3+

C.1) 41.fxg3 Qxd4+ and 42... Qxa1 - + [q vs R].

C.2) 41.Rxg3 Qxd4 42.Rb1 Qe4 probably holds if the queen manages to prevent the coordination of the white pieces.

Jun-01-22  Besrqe: Since the puzzle diagram isn't a "find the crushing shot for the player to move" type, I went back through the game to look for improvements for Black and found an instructive key moment.

Go back to Black's 13th move. Now, I like creative, spicy castling decisions as much as any player. He even did the thing where you shift your King and Rook one square after castling 0-0-0 to make your position a mirrored 0-0 which is always interesting and fun to do.

However, in the strategic sense, 13...0-0-0 was an obvious blunder as far as I can tell. Of course, in French and Caro structures, Black has to watch out for "castling into it" with 0-0 where the Bxh7 sac is common and Black won't be worried about that if he goes ...0-0-0. The problem is, the features for that sac aren't present since he has a N on f6 that can't be dislodged or captured nor does Black have to castle just yet anyway.

Here's the other instructive thing to point out about French, Caro structures and problems with Black castling Qside. Play all of Morphy's games where he faced the French defense and you'll notice he always played the exchange variation with 3.exd5 exd5 4.Nf3. It's what got me into playing it and I added it to my rep. In these lines, I've found Black plays ...0-0-0 quite often. In which case, the type of easy attack White got in this game where you hurl your a and b pawns effortlessly down the board and rip the Qside up is as classic as the Bxh7 sac when Black has castled 0-0.

Although White didn't play the attack as strongly as he could have, he easily had Black on the ropes the whole time. Black got very lucky in this game.

Jun-01-22  goodevans: White should have played <38.Qa3> then if Black had tried something similar, 38...Ra6, he'd have had 39.Qf8+, etc.

38...Nc6 also wouldn't have worked: 39.Qa8+ Kc7 40.b8=Q+ Nxb8 41.Qxb8+ would have had Black's K in a mating net.

The only way to stave off immediate defeat would have been 38...Qxb1+ but then 39.Rxb1 Rb6 40.Qf8+ Kxb7 41.Qxf7+ would have been an easy win for White.

Jun-01-22  TheaN: <38....Rb6 39.Qxb6 Rxg3+! 40.fxg3 (Kh2 Qg2#; Kf1 Qd3+ 41.Ke1 Rg1#) Qe3+ 1/2> the key being 41.Kh2 Qf2+ and 41.Kh1 Qf3+ (followed by the former), and in case White goes to the first rank and the queen can oppose, ie 41.Kf1 Qf3+ 1/2 Black can just keep the opposition as no White piece is covering c3-h3.

A draw for once; not bad, it keeps you on your toes to not always look for a win. The above didn't come easy, looking for 38....Rb6 39.Qxb6 Rxb6? but after 40.Rxb6 +- it's over soon as Black has no perpetual and Ra8 with b8Q+ comes.

Likewise, Qe1+ or Qxb1+ don't achieve enough. Typical during these lines is that at least one piece keeps defending b8, so Kxa7 is not playable because of b8Q+ with mate.

A sideline I did consider is 39.Ra8+, but this only troubles White after 39....Kxb7 40.Qxf7+ (what else?) Kxa8. I didn't calculate this completely so have no evaluation, but I was certain this isn't lost at least so is not White's way to go.

I missed 39.Raa1!?. Bit of an oddball of a move, but 39....Rxb3 40.Rxb3 keeps the Ra8+ threat alive. However, now White's Q:R in the hole so 40....Rxg3+! saves it.
