You are right, and I'm having a hard time saving White's combination after 23...Qxd4, for example 23...Qxd4 24. Raf1 Qe5+ 25. Kh1 Rc7 safely wins the knight. Was White's combination really a miscalculation?
|Aug-22-05|| ||sneaky pete: No combination, no miscalculation as there was nothing left tot calculate, just a lucky swindle in a lost position. As <capanegra> hints, methodical man Euwe wasn't well equipped mentally to deal with swindlers.|
|Aug-22-05|| ||beatgiant: <sneaky pete>
It's not that 23. Nc3 is a miscalcuation, it's the whole combination starting with 17. Qf4. What about 17. Nd2 instead?
|Aug-22-05|| ||sneaky pete: <beatgiant> 17.Nd2 .. or 17.Nc3 .. looks playable, but so does 17.Qf4 Qf6 18.d4 Nf7 19.c4 .. (followed by Nc3 ..). The greedy 19.Qxc7 .. must be the culprit. After 21... Qh4 22.Rf3 fxe3 white is clearly lost, however 22.Rg4 Qe1 23.Rxf4 .. may be good for white. Black could have played 19... Rfc8 (instead of 19... Rac8) when 20.Qxb7 .. loses to .. Qd6 threatening both .. Rcb8 and .. Qxg3.|

|Apr-12-07|| ||whiteshark: <23...Txc3 ??>
Na 23... Qxd4 was het uit geweest, bv
24. Rxf7+ Rxf7 25. Qxc8 Qe5+ 26. Kg1 e2 27. Re1 Qe3+ enz.
Of 24. Raf1 Qe5+ 25. Kh1 Rc7 en 26... Qxc3
|Jan-31-09|| ||Salaskan: What's the point of 5.Qc1?!|
|Jan-31-09|| ||An Englishman: Good Evening: <Salaskan>, that's just Nimzo being Nimzo. Sometimes his seemingly pointless moves really were pointless. He would probably justify 5.Qc1 as prophylaxis, protecting the Bishop and ducking out of a potential pin with ...Bg4. For example, 5.c4?!,e5; 6.fxe5,Ng4 pins and captures the pawn on 35. But seriously, the natural 5.Nf3 is adequate.|
|Jan-31-09|| ||AnalyzeThis: Qc1 isn't necessary immediately, but in some positions it's a useful safeguard against a tactical shot involving .... Ng4.|
Consider the following game for example, where White did not take the proper precautions:

|Oct-01-09|| ||WhiteRook48: after 23...Rxc3 black is dead 23...Kg8 at least prolongs the game|
|Aug-21-10|| ||fetonzio: 5. Qc1 lol, nimzo's got a sense of humor|

|Dec-09-13|| ||john barleycorn: From the tournament book: (my translation)
<Euwe with black delivered a great game against Nimzowitsch and fully deserved to win. Fate did not pay him (who pays today?) but donated the point to Nimzowitsch. Bancruptcy of justice!>
17....Qf6!! a beutiful and correct pawn sacrifice which white has to acept as the threat is Nf3+.
20....Qh4 very strong was Qd6!, e.g. 21.Rf3 Rxc2 22.Rf2 Rc1+ 23.Rf1 Qe6! proving the correctness of Euwe's combination. After the text move it is not clear whether black can achieve more than a draw.
23....Rxc3?? Qxd4 has to be played:
i. 24.Rxf7+ Rxf7 25.Qxc8 Qe5+ 26.Kg1 e2 27.Re1 Rf1! 28.Rxf1 Qe3+ and wins
ii. 24.Raf1 Qe5+ 25.Kh1 Rc7 and wins
|Dec-09-13|| ||john barleycorn: <parisattack: Qc1 :) Definitely Nimzo! X-Ray overprotection of f4.>|
|Dec-09-13|| ||parisattack: HeHe - So it is...sort of.
He seems to admit its a bit of a stretch but guess he couldn't resist it! We sometimes become as people perceive us.
Thanks for the quotes <john barleycorn>!
