  patzer2: Ocampo's resignatuion is premature. After 19...f5 or 19...d3 or 19...Qd5, Black still had counterchances -- even though White maintains a clear advantage (about a pawn plus). Maybe Ocampo didn't want to waste energy trying to salvage a slightly inferior position against GM Fedorowicz. Yet I still wonder why he didn't play on, especially since he had offered to a play a gambit line (a pawn down) in the Benko anyway.

In any event, Fedorowicz demonstrates an effective tactical approach in dealing with the Benko as White using the 5. b6 declined line.

  fredthebear: The Complete Benko Gambit by John Fedorowicz came out in 1990. It was probably not wise for Vargas to attempt it. Then again, he's an underdog regardless.
