An Englishman: Good Evening: Here is a fascinating little game, the only one in the database with 7...a6. I wonder why the move has not inspired more followers. It introduces a host of complications from moves 7 through 22 in which Fine consistently saw just a little further than Lundin, an excellent tactician. Both players have very difficult choices at move 8; I would have played 8...Bxc3; 9.bxc3,dxc4; 10.Bc4,b5; 11.Bd3,c4!?; 12.Bc2,Bb7 with the idea of a blockade at e4 and the eventual break ...e5.

Does anyone know why Fine's seventh move didn't become more popular?

  vonKrolock: Good morning, <An Englishman> - You raises a fine point: the rarity of an early move that is sound in its fundamentals... I found a half dozen samples, notably Furman-Blagidze from Leningrad 1955 (8.a3 Bxc3 9.bxc3 dxc4 10.Bxc4 b5 11.Be2 c4 12.Ne1 Bb7 13.f3 etc) and Najdorf-Quiroga from Mar del Plata 1994 (8.cxd5 exd5 9.Ne5 Nc6 10.Nxc6 bxc6 11.a3 Bxc3 12.bxc3 c4 etc)
