Feb-13-09		M.D. Wilson: I know it's rudimentary, but I honest believe that the Sicilian Defense gives black the best chances. Although I have experimented with the Caro-Kann and the French, I rarely deviate from the Sicilian Defense now. Fischer shows why it's both trustworthy and winnable. This game just reinforced this view

Nov-03-09		Garech: Yes, 28. ... Kxf6 is a ?? in view of 29. ... Qh4+ with mate to follow quickly.

Mar-04-12		screwdriver: I like how Fischer would've had the best king pawn endgame, though a pawn down. If all those pieces get exchanged on the b-file and you're left with just the pawns, Fischer's passed e pawn appears to cause enough trouble to keep white's king at bay. Meantime Fischer can walk up the h file and gobble up the pawns.

Mar-04-12		RookFile: Fischer baited Mednis into launching the kingside attack. It either gets there or it doesn't. In this case it didn't, so that meant that white had a bunch of pieces out of position to play defense on the queenside.

May-31-12		Zugzwangovich: Soltis queries 29.Ng8+ and claims Mednis had a win with 29.b4!! because after 29...cb 30.cb Rb3 White smothers the attack with 31.Rb4!

May-31-12		RookFile: That's interesting. Wonder what a computer can say. Can't imagine anybody on the planet playing 29. b4 or even considering it.

May-31-12		Zugzwangovich: Actually, I found Soltis' analysis in his book "The U.S. Chess Championship", which was published in '86. So it's not too likely he got any silicon help in coming up with 29.b4.

Jun-01-12		RookFile: Thanks for the information. Sure he came up with it, was referring to coming up with the idea over the board and going with it. Who knows? Might be the sort of move somebody like Korchnoi would bash out without thinking.
