Aug-22-04  iron maiden: What would you call 36...Ra8? A pin or a skewer?

tpstar: Perhaps neither. If the Bd8 was a Queen, it's a pin. If the Bc8 was a Queen, it's a skewer (although the skewered Bd8 would be hard to win in this case). In the absence of a better category, this looks like a double attack, or as RJF would say, a shot. Both 37. Bb7 Rxd8 38. Ra3 Nxa6 and 38. a7 Ra2 39. a8=Q Raxa8 appear hopeless.
Mar-09-08  Helios727: I would still call it a "skewer" or "x-ray attack."

<SKEWER> is an attack like this on equal-valued pieces.

Feb-17-12  offramp: This game was played 50 years ago today .... but we still don't know. Is it a pin or a skewer?
Feb-17-12  offramp: Here's a good one. After 28...Rf2 white's bishops are at c1 and d1.
