Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-21-06  The17thPawn: <Chessgames> This could make a good Wednesday/Thursday puzzle. With white to play on move 42. Geller effectively demonstrates the win is in decoying the king away from the h-pawn with tempo. Black must eventually sacrifice his remaining rook to stop the monster. Rf6+ is not convincing unless white finds this theme.

  al wazir: Wouldn't 42. Rg4 also have won? If 42...g5, then 43. Rf6+, followed by 44. Rf5 wins the g-P .
Dec-27-06  The17thPawn: <al wazir> 42.Rg4, Be5 seems to allow black complications it may be winning but Gellers answer looks more simplistic. Oh and do you think this is a puzzle candidate or do you think the existence of more than one possible solution detracts from its candidacy?

al wazir: <The17thPawn>: It's a fine candidate. Geller's 42. Rf6+ is much better than Rg4. But I don't think there's any shortage of puzzle candidates. At least a quarter of all high-level games end with a unique best winning move.

Let's continue Watson vs. Littlewood. I scent blood even if you play something different on black's 37th.
