Kibitzer's Corner
Sep-03-06  alaTurca: Ha ha! One of the funniest games I have ever seen!
Sep-03-06  lisyaron: I must admit, this game did end oddly?
Sep-03-06  Albertan: This game took place in the third round of the Zagreb Interzonal Tournament. In round 2 Korchnoi had played a 62 move draw as white against Hickl and Granda-Zuniga had played tough games in rounds one and two against Einghorn and Torre (Einghorn held the advantage in most of the game against Granda-Zuniga and in the Torre game Granda-Zuniga played the Grunfeld Defense and Torre played Three knights Variation with 5.Bg5 which is complex in nature). So possibly both players were tired going into this game and that is why they agreed to a peaceful draw after 17 moves. This game was all known theory until the end. According to my database this is the only time Korchnoi has faced the 9.a3 variation in the French Defense:classical variation in his career. He lost a game to Nigel Short in 1987 as Black when Short played 9.Na4.
