Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-22-05  KibitzerX: Someone please tell why this is a draw! Why do these GM's do this? Do they not want to play eachother? I really do not understand why anyone would say that this is a draw so early.
May-25-11  MKalafatas: White was not a GM. In fact he was only a FIDE Master at the time this game was played. He won the IM title by winning the US Championship the next year.

I'm not sure but I think Black is a little better in the final position. Perhaps circumstances in the tournament caused him to offer a draw.

perfidious: This game was played in the US Open, in which I also particpated.

One minor point: Rachels did not receive his IM title for winning the US Championship, but for scoring two-thirds (or greater) of the possible points in that Zonal. The fact that he shared first overall had nothing to do with anything.

In earlier days, a number of players who weren't much stronger than this kibitzer made IM by playing in the African, Canadian and Asian zonals and scoring 66 2/3%.

May-27-11  MKalafatas: Thank you, perfidious. Interesting....
