| Jan-21-05 | | catfriend: Way too famous to be a puzzle... I knew the game by heart so guessing the mate wasn't a hard job:) |
 |
| Jan-21-05 | | catlover: The solution is truly elegant. I was seeing something else: 30. Rg4+ fxg4, 31. Bxh7+ Kxh7, 32.Rb4 Bd3, 33.Rxg4 Bg6, 34.Rh4+ Kg8, Rh8#. It probably fails to some move I am not seeing at this point. In any case, even if it works, it is longer and less beautiful that the solution presented above. |
 |
| Jan-21-05 | | panigma: This must stop. WHO CARES IF YOU DID OR DID NOT GET THE SOLUTION? Shut up already! Comment on the play, not your ability to solve a chess puzzle! |

 | | patzer2: Even if Hort had to wait for the third time to be the charm, after missing the wins with 27 Rg4+ and 29 Rg4+, as noted by <Honza Cervenka> and <notsodeepthough>, the solution to today's puzzle with 30. Rg4+ initiates an instructive double attack combination. Of course with 26...Bb5, instead of the blunder 26...Ra7?? pointed out by Honza, Black could have held the position. Note that the try 30. Bxb5 axb5 31. Rg4+?? (better is 31. Rxb5 with a small White advantage) 31...fxg4 32. Rb4 gives Black the win after 33...Rfa8 . |

| Jan-21-05 | | SHall: For Lajos Portisch 14th move, he should've done QxA2 |
 |
| Jan-21-05 | | catlover: The alternate mate I proposed above beginning with 30. Rg4+ fxg4, 31. Bxh7+ Kxh7, 32.Rb4 Bd3, fails to 32...Qd8, instead of Bd3. |

 | | kevin86: <panigma> why the fuss? It was a fine problem-a bit different because white oscillated back and forth to save time-before he delivered the finale, lucky for him, he didn't repeat the position three times, which could then be claimed by his opponent to be a draw. |
 |
| Jan-21-05 | | tal1982: I absolutely agree with Marloff Mirlony. It's a fantastic combination. I thought about something like
30.Bxb5 axb5
31.Rg4+ fxg4
32.Rb4 but it doesn't work in view of
32...Re8
33.Rxg4+ Kf8 and black stays a whole Rook ahead. This example is a clear proof of an important chess truth (which often is forgotten by intermediate players): always check ALL the candidate moves! |
 |
| Apr-27-07 | | DutchDunce: This combination is featured in Cantrell's "Basics of Winning Chess" (I'm starting to sound like an ad for it). The mini-book touts combinations as "the soul of chess." |
 |
| Nov-25-07 | | dabearsrock1010: i think hort was just messing with his opponent by repeating the moves every now and then...but its also a good way to try and reach time control, although this game never got there anyway |
 |
| May-26-11 | | theodor: just great! |

 | | al wazir: Why didn't white play 27. Rg4+ ?
Could it be that he didn't see it? |

 | | al wazir: I see that <Honza> already caught that. <CG> ought to stop recycling games. |

 | | kevin86: White bonced the queen around-her last spot was perfect as it attacks the rook and threatens mate. I guess this game went both the puzzle and gotd route... |

 |
| Jul-27-11 | | cunctatorg: White seems to be already much better then but what is the verdict about Black's 26 ... Ra7, leaving Rf8 without protection? |

 | | Sneaky: <why is it simpler than yesterday?> It's funny that a day NEVER goes by when somebody doesn't say that. Therefore, it follows that for any given week, Sunday is always the easiest puzzle of them all. |
