| kostich in time: Very fine finish by Vlasta..Hort was capable of flights of genius.. |

| Benzol: 25...fxg5 26.h7+ h8 27. g6#
Very nice. Has Hort ever put together a collection of his best games? |

| SneechLatke: Beautiful finish. 25. h6! Is clearly what black overlooked when playing 22...Ne4, though it's hard to really blame him for missing such a brilliant move. |

| makaveli52: what happens if 24...Qxe4 instead of f6? it looks like white should have a winning attack, but I am unable to find an exact line, thx |

| TheGreatNN: Was just about to say that. 23. ..Qxe4 24. f3 Qb7 and black looks ok to me. |
 |
| Nov-22-05 |
| TheGreatNN: Ah, no. 25. h6 g6 (..Bxg5 26. Qxg5 mate in 3) 26. h7+ Now 26. ..Kh8 27.Nxg6+ fxg6 28. Qe5+ wins
26. ..Kg7 27. Bh6+ Kh8 28. Qf4 intending Bg7+..Kxg7 h8 Rxh8 Qxf7#. |

| WannaBe: Missed opportunity on 23. for black. In that position, I can't figure out why black didn't take the rook According to Shredder, 23...Qxe4
24. f3 Qb7
25. h6 g6
26. h7+ h8
27. Nxg6+ (3.73)
still a bad position to be in though...

| TheGreatNN: Sorry didnt read close enough. 24. ..Qxe4 is followed by 25. Rg1 g6 26. Qh6 then winning the exchange on g6, probably with mate in a few moves. |
 |
| Nov-22-05 |
| NakoSonorense: If 23...Qxe4, then 24.Bxe7 Re8 25.h6 And then something bad happens to black. I dont know what, but something bad ought to happen. |
 |
| Nov-22-05 |
| NakoSonorense: Ok, I just realized that the other white rook is undendeed, so please disregard my previous post. :) |

 |
| WannaBe: <NakoSonorense> if 24. Bxe7 that is a win for black. =) But I'll disregard your previous post. =) |
 |
| Nov-22-05 |
| NakoSonorense: now that you're disregarding stuff, also do so for part of my previous post because I wrote "undendeed" instead of "undefended" :) |

| al wazir: Why black can't take the rook: 24...Qxe4 25. Rg1 Qh7 (25...Qxe5 26. dxe5 g6 27. Qf6, with h6 and Qg7# to follow; 25...g6 26. Qf6, again threatening h6 and Qg7#; if 26...Kh7, then 27. hxg6+ fxg6 28. Qe7+, with mate to follow) 26. h6 g6 27. Nd7 f6 (if 27...Rfd8 or 27...Kh8, then 28. Nf6 wins the queen) 28. Nxf6+ Rxf6 29. Qxf6 Rf8 30. Rxg6+ Qxg6 31. Qxg6+. |

| EmperorAtahualpa: This is a nice GOTD by Hort (good pun too!). On Black's part, I guess although 23...Qxe4 does keep Black somewhat in the game, Black already blew it with 19...c5?? Black could have moved his badly positioned Knight (19...Nd7), a move that would also counter the threat of 20.g5. The mating combination in the end is a little more difficult when Black takes neither Queen or Knight, but instead moves 25...Rf7! In that case, the combination would be 26.h7+ Kf8 27.Ng6+! Ke8 28.Qxd5! Re7 29.Rxe6 Rxe6 30.Qxe6+ Kd8 31.Qe7+ Kc8 32.h8=Q#: click for larger view |

| kevin86: Two possible alternate puns:"Chandler left without Friends" "Checkless Czech win". A great finish, with black's seemingly dangerous pawn not even amounting to a hill of beans. White's queen and rook are under fire-but to no avail by black! |

 |
| OhioChessFan: 23....Qxe4 looks obvious. Is there some tactical refutation I'm missing? |
 |
| Nov-22-05 |
| Chopin: I love the Pun. White has to decide how he wants to lose. If Black takes the queen, it's mate in 2 and if the Knight is gone, mate in 1. |
 |

 |
| patzer2: Hort calmly ignores Chandler's double attack and the threat to his Queen to play the surprise 25. h6!! launching a decisive attack on the weakened castled position. |

| Richard Taylor: <OhioChessFan: 23....Qxe4 looks obvious. Is there some tactical refutation I'm missing?> If 23...Q:e4 24. B:e7 and White wins - his attack on the King is too strong and he has 2 pieces for a rook. |
 |

 |
| Richard Taylor: If 24...Q:e4 25. Ng4 must be winning. Nice attack by Hort at the expense of Murray Chandler (NZ's only home grown GM!) butI dont think that that variation of the Caro is very good for Black. |

| psmith: <Richard Taylor>: as noted above by <NakoSonorense> 23... Qxe4 24. Be7? Qxh1 mates. |
