Kibitzer's Corner
Jan-19-04  InspiredByMorphy: If this doesen't say something for the Birds defense, I dont know what does! Great play from Ivanchuk.
Jan-20-04  Lawrence: But from "Opening Explorer" one sees that Black wins very few games. btw, Ivanchuk is very popular here in Spain, almost a "local hero" in Linares.
Aug-12-04  Whitehat1963: Still another good example of the life left in the opening of the day.
Nov-24-04  Poisonpawns: This is how the Birds defense in the ruy lopez is to be played! Too many weak players have ruined its reputation, but it goes to show that in the right hands almost any opening, as long as it is sound can be quite playable.
Dec-07-04  Poisonpawns: Calling all players of the Birds Defense to the Ruy lopez! this game is a must know.
Dec-07-04  maddy: why is 6e5 is bad?
Dec-07-04  Willem Wallekers: maddy: you mean 6. e5 iso Qe2?
6. e5 could be dangerous:
6. e5 d5 7. Bb3 Bg4 8. f3 Ne4 9. 0-0 d3 10. fxg4 Ng3+ 11. hxg3 Qg5 (Anderssen - Lange, 1859, 0-0). But 10. Qe1 could be better for white (Breja - Oprea, 1993, 1-0).

The stats for 6. Qe2 aren't too good.
Simple 6. 0-0 and 7. d3 is probably best.

This game proves that the Bird is playable as a surprise weapon, but not more than that.

I prefer to play 4. Ba4 to hold the pin on d7.

Dec-07-04  Poisonpawns: Black gets an easy game after 4.Ba4 !? Here is another killer game in the birds ruy lopez Bacrot vs Morozevich, 2004
May-13-05  ughaibu: Willem Wallekers: it proves nothing of the sort, perhaps on the previous evening Ivanchuk told Short that he would use Bird's.
May-22-05  who: Why not 10.fxg7 ... 11.Qxc4. Or reverse the order.
May-23-08  luzhin: Short must have been praying for 44...Kh6(??) 45.Ng4+ Kh5 46.Rxh7 mate!

White was already crushed by move 17. The Bird Opening is a failure.

Dionysius1: Eh? Since the Birds Defence is played by black and you think it has crushed white by 17, how does that make it anything other than a success?
Jun-04-13  cunctatorg: Well, we can't be absolutely sure what opening, and what variation, is a failure and what is a success...

Before Kasparov, who could think that the Scotch game could be used as a weapon against such a player of rare strength, as Anatoly Karpov?!?

Who could think that the Berlin variation of the Ruy Lopez could become such a reliable defense, before its use from Vladimir Kramnik against Garry Kasparov? On the contrary the extremely reliable Grunfeld defense never has been proven a much for Karpov, even if the defender was Kasparov himself!...

No, it's a sign that Short sucks at chess. No other grandmaster would fail this badly against such a dubious opening.

Short played like a patzer.

Jun-06-13  Just Another Master: Conrad93, right on, the play by white was pure Trash
