Kibitzer's Corner
Feb-28-06  Nobutitis: He draws Ivanov AGAIN??

He may not be that easy for me
to whip after all...

And note the BOLDNESS of Master
Renard's play thru-out here.
He's willing to do many things:
He's willing to tolerate doubled pawns, because they usually shield the King better (and luckily Black
wasn't already prepped on the h-file).
He goes for BLOCKADES, for
TRANSFORMATIONS that result in the
(almost) better minor piece.
He focuses on the center as the pivot
point of nearly all his operations, then takes the bold step of timing a wing breakthru just when
Black is bunched on the other side!

He shakes! He bakes! He's a Ginzu
knife!

Phony Benoni: There's a well-know R+N drawing mechanism that looks something like this:

Black draws by checking with his knight on h2 and f3, as White can never escape to h1 because of ...Rh2#. (Assuming it's Black's move, of course!)

It takes a bit more imagination to come up with something similar using R+B:

45...Rd2 would be the instinctive reaction, but Black decides to go straight for the safe harbor with <45...Rc2> and <46...c4>, when the White king won't be able to escape the checks.
