Feb-18-08  vonKrolock: <40...Kh5> Pollock missed here a neat win: 41.Rc8! Qxb2 42.Bd4!! Qxd4 43.Rxe2 etc.

<41.Bf2>?? Passed without comments in some of the contemporary sources...

Pawn and Two: <vonKrolock> Interesting find. I note that neither the original Hastings 1895 tournament book, edited by Horace Cheshire, with notes for this game by von Bardeleben, nor the 1995 edition by Colin Crouch & Kean Haines, noted this winning line for White.

Surprisingly, a move later, Pollock missed another win. Fritz showed the following line as winning for White: 42.Re1 Qxb2 43.Rh7+ Kg6 44.Rd7 Kh5 45.Bxa7 Qxa2 46.Bb6 Qb3 47.Rxd6. If now, 47...Nf5, then 48.Rc6 Ne3 49.Bd4 Qc2 50.Bxe3 fxe3 51.Rxe3, and the ending, though difficult, is winning for White.

This line was also not mentioned in either tournament book.

Feb-18-08  vonKrolock: <Pawn and Two> :) Then the <??> for white 41st move are exagerated... Pollock had still a won game - Only without the highly aesthetically pleasant Be3-d4 <!!> a tempo: The german book on Hastings 1895 (Schallopp - Leipzig, 1896; von Veit Ed.) also neglects these possibilities
