Honza Cervenka: This is a superb game of Karpov which shows well the importance of control of the open file with major pieces.

If 31...Nd7, then 32.Bxg6! fxg6 33.Qxg6 (treatening 34.Re8+) 33...Qc8 34.Re6 with a mate in several moves.

35...Qxc3 would not have been better for 36.Re3 Qc8 37.Re6 (threatening 38.Rxg6+ Kxg6 39.Qf6+ with mate.) 37...Kg8 38.Rxg6+! fxg6 39.Re6 and black is defenceless.

Apr-13-06  offramp: Karpov had a huge score against the French Tarrasch in the early 70s. But along came Viktor Kortschnoi - http://www.chessgames.com/perl/ches... - to show that strong players can play the opening without fear.

May-23-10  Rubenchik: calm ... before the storm, g4!
