plang: 10 Nb5 was introduced by Karpov in 1993 when he played it 3 times in the WC match with Timman. It seems more double edged than the systems Karpov usually uses it buthe obviously has a lot of confidence with it. 26 Re5 was stronger winning the Q for R & B. 34 f3..Bf3 would have introduced complications not at all unfavorable for black. Still, 34 Re2 looked risky leaving the back rank vulnerable in time trouble. Karpov, however, had calculated correctly. This database is fantastic but as has been mentioned many times it is not comprehensive. There is a built-in bias in favor of the stronger players. Biel was a double round robin. Karpov's win over Lautier was voted 20th best game in Informant #70. Lautier won their other meeting and that game was voted 7th best game in Informant #70. That game is not in the database; I've noticed that several of Lautiers best games are not included here.
