Kibitzer's Corner
Apr-14-04  ToTheDeath: Another fantastic crush. Black's position teeters over the brink, and just a tiny Kasparov push (22. g4!) sets him falling.

  Shams: on 19...Rxg4
did Kasparov intend 20.Nxf5 Rf4 21.Nxd5 Rxf2 22.Rxd7+ and 23. Rxf2 ?
Dec-01-04  Minor Piece Activity: Seems about right to me. Nxg5 would be only about equal since black would have 2B against R but with shattered king shelter.
Nov-20-06  ToTheDeath: Andrew Soltis in his book The Inner Game of Chess incorrectly states that 19. Rxg5 20. Nxf6 Bf3 leads to a draw, failing to see that 21. Nxg8! Rxg2+ 22. Qxg2 wins.
Feb-26-08  vonKrolock: <19.Bg5> If 19...Rxg5, then 20.Nxf6 etc

<22.g2-g4> And if now 22...Rh8 then 23.Bxf6! etc

(indicated by Kasparov after the game - source: M. Yudovich)

May-18-12  Call Me TC: <Andrew Soltis in his book The Inner Game of Chess incorrectly states that 19. Rxg5 20. Nxf6 Bf3 leads to a draw, failing to see that 21. Nxg8! Rxg2+ 22. Qxg2 wins.>

<The Inner Game of Chess> dates from 1994 and I surmise that Soltis picked this up from the January 1985 BCM:

<Richard Cochrane of Paisley writes:

Whilst reading the Gary Kasparov book <Fighting Chess>, I came across an error by M.M. Botvinnik in his notes to Kasparov v Roizman, Minsk 1978.

Kasparov played 19.Bg5, earning an exclamation mark from Botvinnik with the quote "To reply 19...Rxg5 isn't on, because of 20.Nxf6! and Black's position is torn asunder.">

Unfortunately the variations that Cochrane gives to justify his 20...Bf3!! didn't include 21.Nxg8!

waustad: I agree with <KingG>. It is amazing that it is white opening the g file with doubled rooks aiming at his king.
