Kibitzer's Corner
Dec-19-04  who: Is there an obvious win here?
I guess
41... Bg8 42.g5 fxg5 43.Nxg5 Kf6
But it doesn't seem obvious.
Dec-19-04  percyblakeney: Fritz predicts 41. ... Bg8 42. Nf4 Kf8 43. Kh4 Kg7 44. g5 fxg5+ 45. Kxg5 Kf7 46. Nxd5 as the next moves.
Dec-19-04  Cyphelium: <who> The knight is dominating the bishop after 41.- Bg8 42. Nf4. Black has to keep the bishop looking after the d5-pawn, since he cannot play Kd7-c6 in view of Nh5 and the f6-pawn is lost. (Covering h5 with Bf7 doesn't help, since after a black capture on h5, white gets a free h-pawn.) In short, black is completely passive and can only sit there waiting: 42.- Kd7 43. Kh4 Bf7 44. g5 fxg5+ 45. Kxg5 and black cannot keep white's king from getting to f6. For example 45.- Ke7 46. Ng6+ Ke8 (after 46.- Bxg6 the pawn endgame is clearly lost) 47. Kf6 and now black is helpless against the threat of 48. Kg7, placing him in zugzwang.
Dec-19-04  Eatman: Basically white is a a pawn up and black has no counterplay. I would assume the game was adjourned here and Ivanov figured that even the young Kasparov could manage to win this one with no complications.
