Kibitzer's Corner
Mar-29-04  Resignation Trap: Luis Rentero, organizer of the Linares events, tried to fine both players $1000 for agreeing to this draw in under 40 moves, as stipulated in their contracts. It was not enforced since it was shown that avoidance of repetition would involve risk of loss. For example, 19...Qe7 20. g3! Bf6 21. Qg2, when White may make his extra Pawn count for something.

If White were to try 18. g4, it could easily backfire: 18...Qa5 19. b3 Nb6.

Sep-26-04  clocked: 14.Be3 was suggested, but did little to change the evaluation in Z Zufic vs D Kuljasevic, 2001
