Nf6 5. Nc3 O-O 6. Bd3 Nc6 7. e5 dxe5 8. fxe5 {The old
main-line position of the Austrian Attack. Now 8...Nd5 was
refuted in Fischer - Perez, Havana 1965, while 8...Ng4 never
recovered from the game Gligoric - Quinteros, Vinkovci 1970,
which continued 9 Be4 f6 10 h3 Nh6 11 Bd5+ Kh8 12 O-O Nf5 13
Re1! Nfxd4 14 Nxd4 Nxd4 15 Qxd4 and whichever way Black
chooses to regain the piece he remains with a markedly
inferior position. In this line the bold piece sacrifice
10...fxe5! 11 hxg4 exd4 certainly deserves attention. The text
move 8...Nh5! was mentioned, but not analysed, by Fischer in
his My 60 Memorable Games. To the best of my knowledge the
move was first employed in an international tournament in the
game Safvat - Keene, Siegen Olympiad 1970.} 8...Nh5 {! The
idea behind this is to clear g4 for the queen's bishop, to
intensify the measure against White's d-pawn. A similar scheme
is introduced by 8...Ne8!?, as in Sax - Keene, Rovinj/Zagreb
1975.} 9. Be4 {9 Be2 occurred in Browne - Timman, IBM 1971,
but I feel that this meek retreat cannot really be dangerous
for Black.} 9...Bg4 10. Be3 f6 11. Qe2 {!?? A novelty, but no
good. White plans O-O-O plus Qc4+ and Bxc6, maintaining the
cramping pawn at e5. But it's all too slow. Normal is 11 exf6
to which I replied 11...exf6!? in my above-mentioned game
v. Safvat, which continued 12 O-O Ne7 13 Qd2 c6 14 Rae1 Kh8 15
Ne2 f5 with a reasonable game for Black. After 11 exf6, Parma
- Kagan, Netanya 1971, continued 11...Nxf6 12 Bxc6 bxc6 13 O-O
Nd5 14 Nxd5 Qxd5 15 c3 Rab8 16 Qe2 Rf7 17 Rf2 Rbf8 with
balanced chances.} 11...fxe5 12. Bxc6 bxc6 13. Qc4+ e6 {!
Threatening a potential ...Qh4+ which is most unpleasant for
White.} 14. Bg5 {Alternatives to this move are: a) 14 O-O-O
e4! 15 Nxe4 Qd5 with an excellent game for Black. b) 14 dxe5
Bxf3 15 gxf3 Rxf3 16 Qxe6+ Kh8 17 Ke2 Rxe3+! 18 Kxe3 Qg5+ and
Black wins. c) 14 Nxe5 Qh4+ 15 Kd2 (if 15 g3 Nxg3) 15...Rf2+!
16 Bxf2 Qxf2+ 17 Kc1 Qf4+ 18 Kb1 Bxe5 19 h3 (if 19 Qxc6 Rf8 20
Ne2 Qd2) 19...Ng3 20 Rc1 Qxd4 21 Qxd4 Bxd4 22 hxg4 Bxc3 23
bxc3 Rb8 with an incredible checkmate.} 14...Qb8 {!! Gligoric
had missed this, and now he is lost. Some variations: a) 15
Nxe5 Qxb2 16 Rb1 Qxc2 17 Nxg4 Qxg2 18 Qxe6+ Kh8 19 Qe4 Rae8
(the computer program Fritz gives 19...Rf3 here) 20 Ne5 Qxg5
21 Nf7+ Rxf7 22 Qxe8+ Rf8 with a huge attack; or 16 Rc1 Bxe5
17 dxe5 Qb6! 18 Qxg4 Qf2+ 19 Kd1 Rad8+ 20 Bxd8 Rxd8+ and
wins. b) 15 dxe5 Qxb2 followed by ...Bxf3 and ...Qxc2 winning
much material.} 15. O-O-O Bxf3 16. gxf3 exd4 17. Ne4 Qb5
18. Qxe6+ Kh8 19. Rd3 Rae8 20. Qg4 Qd5 {The position has
clarified into a clear win for Black.} 21. b3 c5 22. c4 Qe5
23. Qg2 Nf4 24. Bxf4 Qxf4+ 25. Kb2 Qf5 26. Re1 Bh6 {!} 27. Re2
Be3 28. Kc2 Re5 {Covering c5.} 29. Rexe3 dxe3 30. Rxe3 Rd8
31. Qg3 Re7 32. Qe1 Qe5 33. Re2 Qf5 34. Qc3+ Qe5 35. Qe1 Rdd7

back to the a1-h8 diagonal. Black wins by concentrating

Dec-10-03		AdrianP: This was a high calibre scalp for GM Keene... patient and impressive technique. Gligoric's Rxe3?! exchange sac looks dubious but there doesn't seem to be anything better. The d-passer was a monster.

Nov-19-05		Hemmeireoid5: Hello just had a look at this game. I was wondering if anyone has any comments on the following move for white..... 19: Be7 I am probably getting way in over my head but the idea is to threaten Ng5 and force a smothered mate with Nf7 a few moves later. e.g. 19:Be7 Rae8 20. Ng4 Thanks for your comments.

Jan-16-06		ray keene: after 19 be7 the obvious reply is ---rf5 controlling g5 and c5 and preparing the resource ---re5, tho there are also other ideas in the postion of course
