Honza Cervenka: Keres played the game too passively and Smyslov punished his passivity without mercy.
Jun-06-03  kutuzov: Keres always tried to turn placid positions into violent attacking positions. However, you cannot play so passively against a former world champ.
Jun-26-08  alexrawlings: Should Keres not have captured the knight on move 31, doubling black's pawns and weakening his king?

A little late to the party, but Smyslov anticipated your question:

<Black has gradually improved the positions of his pieces on the queenside, and he does not fear 31.Bxf6 gxf6, when White has no real threats.>

plang: This was the first game where 7 Qf3 was played - the move has achieved some popularity. Had White played 12 a3 Black would have had a good game after 12..b5 13 e5..dxe 14 fxe..Nxe5 15 Qxa8..Neg4 16 Bf4..Qb6+ 17 Kh1..Bb7. Played a move later 13 a3!? looks a bit odd though it has been repeated a few times; 13 g4 would have been the choice of many. Smyslov was critical of 19 Nb1? after which Black took over the initiative; still possible was 19 g4..Qd8 20 g5..Ne8 though Black looks OK here. 23..b5 was a key move in Black's plan preventing White from playing b5 and Nc6 and taking away c4 from the White Knight.
