Well, White is in <check> - that's a serious crimp.
White made a mistake: 48. Rd1? Staunton immediately swapped rooks; the white knight can't cope with both the f-pawns and a-pawns.

White might have drawn with 48. Nd1!, followed by Ke1. Probably Black would have won anyway.

The thing that gets my goat - White had the choice between 48. Rd1? and 48. Nd1.
Bloody typical that he had a choice from two and he made the wrong choice.
