Sep-18-06  Drawnomore: I find it! Nice
Sep-18-06  Aristarch: <backyard pawn: even chose 23. Ne7 over 23. Nf6, even though they both work equally well, giving a double-check with the Black king having no place to run.> 23. Nf6+? is refuted by gxf6 24. Bxf7+ Nxf7, and Black wins!

  gawain: Easy. But pretty.
Sep-18-06  tacite: How does the human brain work? I cannot solve the easy monday puzzle but manage to solve more difficult ones such as last thursday, saterday and sunday. Well... I guess it was all about luck. Anyway, pretty nice ending by Manson.
Sep-18-06  zb2cr: Quick and easy, found the Queen sac right off. 23. Ne7# is a nice finish.
Sep-18-06  kevin86: A little harder than usual on Monday-black can forestall the mate by one move by interposing his queen on 22,but the last move would be mate by double check.
Sep-18-06  Marmot PFL: Very nice mate. james Mason was a fine actor as well, three oscar nominations and appeared in movies like Lolita and The Verdict. I wonder if he and Bogart ever played.
Sep-18-06  YouRang: What a nifty variation of a smother mate! It took me a little longer than usual for a Monday.

Now 21. Qxh7+ was the first move I looked at, to be followed by 22. Rh4+, but failed to notice at first that the discovered queen pin allowed the knight to deliver checkmate with 23. Ne7#. I got it the second time around though. :-)

Sep-18-06  lopium: Hard monday puzzle.
Sep-18-06  ex0duz: Saw the discovered bishop check/pin and immediately went through those lines.. until i saw the queen sacrifice and remembered it was monday. 'Twas easy after that.

Also, im curious as to whether or not white could have finished it earlier; instead of 9.Nxc3, what about 9.Bxf7+! Kxf7 10. Ng5+, ?? 11. Qxg4! with a nice position i think.. i'm not sure what black could do if he doesnt accept the bishop sacrifice but yeah.. my intuition tells me its worth looking at, and at least, white will be positionally better off having superior development of minor pieces+pawn pressure in the middle(maybe even another Ne5 sacrifice to open lines later, TAL styles ;))along with blacks king unable to castle. Can anyones silicon monster prove me wrong? thanks in advance. :)

Sep-18-06  clausantos: Missed! Bad Monday puzzle.
Sep-18-06  rover: <ex0duz> 9.Bxf7?? Kxf7 10.Ng5+ Qxg5! and black won a piece (11.Qb3+? Qd5 or 11.fxg5 Bxd1)
Sep-18-06  vesivialvy93: ....a 1200 elo player can solve this one in less than a minute ! even Bruce Pandolfini in his stupid chess life page wouldn't be so easy....
Sep-18-06  CoryLetain: Of coarse I got this one, the queen sac is just too obvious.
Sep-18-06  ArturoRivera: By move 9 Mason its definitely worst
Sep-18-06  Jackz: What happens after 19. ...Nxd4?
Sep-18-06  unferth: <Marmot PFL: Very nice mate. james Mason was a fine actor as well, three oscar nominations and appeared in movies like Lolita and The Verdict. I wonder if he and Bogart ever played.>

not the same James Mason, of course

Sep-18-06  donRamon72: Why can't all the puzzles be monday puzzles?
Sep-18-06  asip87: haaha.. solve this puzzle within 10 sec..

why didnt he played..
19..NxBc4!!

Sep-18-06  patzer2: Today's puzzle solution is a mate-in-three, which begins with the decoy 21. Qxh7+! and is followed by the forcing 22. Rh4+ to allow the combined smothered mate and pin move 23. Ne7#.

For those new to the game, note that after 22. Rh4+ the White Rook covers the Black King's potential escape squares so he cannot flee. And after 23. Ne7#, the Bishop pins the Queen to prevent her capture of the checking Knight. Since the King cannot interpose (for any Knight check), capture the Knight here or flee from its check, Black is checkmated after 23. Ne7#.

Instead of 20...Qxf7??, Black could have held with 20...Nxf7! =. Of course White set a trap with 20. Rf4!, figuring Black would go for the "obvious" 20...Qxf7?? and not see the saving 20...Nxf7! =.

Sep-18-06  patzer2: <why didnt (Black) play..
19...NxBc4!>
? Good question. Guess Black didn't see 19...Nxc4! 20. Rf3! (practically a forced "only move") 20...Rxf7! (also forced) 21. Qxf7 Ne5 22. Qh5 Nxf3 23. Qxf3 Bd4 when Black has an extra pawn and a good position.
Aug-06-07  Sibahi: Ouch !!, that must've hurt.
Feb-28-09  WhiteRook48: great attack!
NN, the victim of Queen sacs
Mar-06-20  Marcelo Bruno: One of Mason's last gems.

As so often in these GM vs. NN games, Black missed a defense viz. 20... Nf7 21.Nb6 ab6 22.Rg1 b5 23.Rh4 Nh6

<akiba82>,
If NN played the correct moves all the time, then we wouldn't have so many sparkling combinations to gaze over LOL
