Burn!!> (The PGN for the game is byrne_byrne 1949) And just think if you were Donald and Robert's father, you could introduce them as your son Byrnes. Nice game though. 8.Ng5! is very interesting and strong IMO. I was expecting Ne5 there. But the continuation with 8...Nxg5 9.Nxe4! is practically forced. I think 9...Bxf4 cooked Donald's goose, had should have conceded the pawn and played 9.0-0 -- did he really think he could snap up the pawn and fight his way out of the discovery threats from the N on e4? <"What a Fool Believes" 12...Qxd4??, but in Chess, a wise man does have the power to reason away.> Yeah, Qxd4 loses almost immediately ... but black has serious problems...I don't think black has a move. I thought 12...Qh6 let him hang on a bit longer but 13.Kd2! wins the N (the more intuitive 13.Kf2? leads to tactical insanity and black counterplay after 13...f4.) 12...Qe7 also fails, again to 13.Kd2. I think this would make an excellent short Guess-the-Move game. |

This is totally irrelevant, but before the sunblock era there was a fashion - mostly in Australia - for homemade tan tattoos, made by cutting out a stencil of a word or image, putting it on your skin, and lying in the sun. The rays would do the rest. It seems it was mainly used by teenagers burning on the names of boyfriends or girlfriends, not worrying about future consequences. Which led to the headline of an article I saw: "A melanoma named Bruce". |

But I looked (with help from Mr. Silicon) and you're are right that black isn't absolutely no-chances-to-draw dead -- I went in a half dozen moves and the evaluation is roughly +2.0 for white. I guess I would expect a professional player to struggle on looking for some way to swindle a draw, but after 13.gxf4 I wouldn't want to play black, would you? |

If you want to play 13 g3 instead of 13 Kd2 black will castle.

My line was mis-numbered, I had responded to this <"What a Fool Believes" 12...Qxd4??, but in Chess...> I didn't check that there is no 12...Qxd4, it should have been numbered 13...Qxd4 despite the faulty numbering, my analysis was for alternate 13th moves for black, not alternate 12th... and in my analysis, g3 has been played. Make sense?
