Jul-12-07  Morphyisgod: What about 10.ne5+ ke6?

Phony Benoni: After 10...Ke6, Black probably wins and the scoresheet gets tossed into the wastebasket, never to see the light of day or the inside of a database.

For every brilliancy of this type, there are probably dozens of games where the sacrifice is easily refuted and the defense prevails. But those games don't get preserved; they aren't beautiful or any fun.

If we had every single game that Morphy played, we'd have a good number of losses where his sacrifices didn't work out so well, and our opinion of his strength would likely change for the worse.

Jul-12-07  nolanryan: black was a total patzer and would have found a way to lose after 10 .. Ke6
Dec-15-07  D4n: This is a nice checkmate!
Feb-07-11  meppi: my guess is after 10 Ke6 something like

my guess is after 10 Ke6 something like 11. Qf7+ Kxe5 12. d4+ and if Kxd4 maybe
13. Nc3 (hoping for the black knight to move so white can checkmate on d5 or other such tricks!) and also follow blacks next move with Be3+ whenever you can if the king goes to d4

if 12. Kxe4 then you can hope for
13. Re1+ Kxd4
14. Nc3 Qd7 (or any other move that does not defend d5 or e4) 15. Re4+ Nxe4
16. Qd5# yay!

if you start the game with such a unsound attack you may as well finish it like that aswell
