feel like a proper spoiler <24 Ng5> seems to just not make any
serious gains. It certainly doesn't lose immediately - like a proper spoiler
would - so is it really a spoiler or just a bad move that shouldn't be chosen? Have <CG> made yet another boo-boo, two days in a row...? |

Surely that's much stronger? For example 25...Ne5 26. Qf3 Nxf3 27.Nxf3 Re2+! and 28...Bxf3 Maybe I'm missing something obvious because I'm not using an engine. |

Nh4 but black still comes out winning. Looks like the theme for this week's POTD is "stump the chump". |

| Dec-06-16 | | patzer2: Well, for today's Tuesday puzzle solution, I guess I was supposed to avoid the "spoiler" and find the computer "best move" 24. Nh4 and suffer the exchange down after 24...Qf7  (-0.80 @ 20 depth, Deep Fritz 15). However, this looks like slow torture and almost a sure loss against an opponent of even or better strength. Given I was an exchange down, against a human opponent I just might have taken my chances (especially in blitz) on going down in flames after 24. Ng5? because any move other than 24...Qxg2+! (-2.77 @ 20 depth, Deep Fritz 15) is losing for Black. White's decisive mistake appears to be the self pin 16. Ke1? allowing 16...Qc5 (-1.21 @ 22 depth, Deep Fritz 15). Instead, 16. Kg1 = holds it level. For example, after 16. Kg1 Qc5+ 17. d4 Qc5 18. h3  (+0.45 @ 22 depth, Deep Fritz 15) White is fine. However after 16. Ke1? Qc5 17. d4 Qc5, the move 18. h3? is not good due to 18...Qxf3  winning a piece due to the King's sad self pin (i.e. 16. Ke1?) earlier. Earlier, White could have gotten a good game with 15. Ne5! when play might continue 15...b4 (not 15... Nxe5? 16. fxe5 Ng4+ 17. Bxg4 Qb6+ 18. Kg3 Bxg4 19. Kxg4  ) 16. Bb2 Nf5

As I guessed, the whole point of this puzzle is to see the refutation of 24 Ng5. Therefore I did not spend too much time looking through the alternatives. 24 Nh4 seemed good enough to me--and proves to be best, or nearly best. |

 | | scormus: Great spoiler, very easy to miss the trap set by B. Well, I suppose I have to say it's a good one since I fell right into it. As a consolation prize I picked 24 Nh4 on my second go, which the engine rates as the best damage limitation move in a slightly inferior position for W. |

I got caught with my pants round ankles on that one. The funny bit is been walking around like that all day. A 3 second look, Ng5 wins. (I never even looked at the solution - it's a Tuesday, no need to look.) It's cheating. C.G. has cheated me out of my 100% Tuesday record. :) I only came here when I logged on again, the name rang a bell from something I'd seen months ago - could not remember what. Then I caught a glimpse of some of the posts and finally...the result. Rodolfo Tan Cardoso was the lad who spotted Wes So. |

My only redeeming moment was thinking that white must have sacked the exchange in order to come up with a brilliant move, so at least I managed to think like the person at the table. Of course, the only brilliant part of this was its choice as a Tuesday puzzle. |
