Dec-06-16 | | gofer: Well, I couldn't see anything... ...the obvious <24 Ng5?> is flawed. So we need to find something better. Due to being an exchange down,
but a pawn up, material is more or less even. Okay, probably I would
play <24 Nh4>, but wouldn't hold my breath waiting for the win... After yesterday, I suppose this is a spoiler, but it doesn't quite
feel like a proper spoiler <24 Ng5> seems to just not make any
serious gains. It certainly doesn't lose immediately - like a proper spoiler
would - so is it really a spoiler or just a bad move that shouldn't be chosen? Have <CG> made yet another boo-boo, two days in a row...? |
Dec-06-16 | | cocker: I thought it looked a bit too easy. Well done <chessgames> for keeping us on our toes. |
Dec-06-16 | | Beholder: Why not 25...Ne5 instead of 25...Nb4?
Surely that's much stronger? For example 25...Ne5 26. Qf3 Nxf3 27.Nxf3 Re2+! and 28...Bxf3 Maybe I'm missing something obvious because I'm not using an engine. |
Dec-06-16 | | matvox: Thanks for the Friday puzzle on Tuesday |
Dec-06-16 | | zb2cr: I can discover an attack against the Black Queen with a simultaneous mate threat! But Black discovers one right back. Nothing there after 24. Ng5, Qxg2+; 25. Kxg2, Nb4+. In fact, I thought this must be a Sunday-level puzzle. Looks as though I didn't fall for the spoiler. |
Dec-06-16 | | catlover: A spoiler! No wonder I couldn't find any winning moves in this "easy" puzzle. My half-baked idea was 24. Ne5. It didn't work, but then nothing does. Stockfish recommends 24. Nh4 but black still comes out winning. Looks like the theme for this week's POTD is "stump the chump". |
Dec-06-16 | | patzer2: Well, for today's Tuesday puzzle solution, I guess I was supposed to avoid the "spoiler" and find the computer "best move" 24. Nh4 and suffer the exchange down after 24...Qf7 (-0.80 @ 20 depth, Deep Fritz 15). However, this looks like slow torture and almost a sure loss against an opponent of even or better strength. Given I was an exchange down, against a human opponent I just might have taken my chances (especially in blitz) on going down in flames after 24. Ng5? because any move other than 24...Qxg2+! (-2.77 @ 20 depth, Deep Fritz 15) is losing for Black. White's decisive mistake appears to be the self pin 16. Ke1? allowing 16...Qc5 (-1.21 @ 22 depth, Deep Fritz 15). Instead, 16. Kg1 = holds it level. For example, after 16. Kg1 Qc5+ 17. d4 Qc5 18. h3 (+0.45 @ 22 depth, Deep Fritz 15) White is fine. However after 16. Ke1? Qc5 17. d4 Qc5, the move 18. h3? is not good due to 18...Qxf3 winning a piece due to the King's sad self pin (i.e. 16. Ke1?) earlier. Earlier, White could have gotten a good game with 15. Ne5! when play might continue 15...b4 (not 15... Nxe5? 16. fxe5 Ng4+ 17. Bxg4 Qb6+ 18. Kg3 Bxg4 19. Kxg4 ) 16. Bb2 Nf5
17. Bf3 Bb7 18. Nc4 Qc5+ 19. Kf1 Nh4 20. Qf2 Qxf2+ 21. Kxf2 Nxf3 22. gxf3 (+0.79 @ 25 depth, Deep Fritz 15). |
Dec-06-16 | | Mendrys: Nice one Chessgames. I wasn't positive that this was a spoiler as I spent a little too much time trying to find the "correct" solution but did feel good about rejecting 24. Ng5? precisely because of 24...Qxg2. |

Dec-06-16
 | | gawain: I like the spoilers.
As I guessed, the whole point of this puzzle is to see the refutation of 24 Ng5. Therefore I did not spend too much time looking through the alternatives. 24 Nh4 seemed good enough to me--and proves to be best, or nearly best. |
Dec-06-16 | | PJs Studio: Ok, Ng5 stinks, but I have no idea what white should play! |
Dec-06-16 | | FinnPatzer: Easier to notice OTB, given that black left the queen in the centre on the last move before the puzzle position. |
Dec-06-16 | | TheTamale: Haha, got me. I even tried to find a refutation from Black, which I don't generally do. I should have been suspicious that a Tuesday puzzle would solve with a one-move singer, however... |
Dec-06-16 | | kevin86: fooled me fooled me :) |

 | | steinitzfan: Spoilers are good. A strong argument can be made that you haven't truly solved any problem if you haven't established that there are no spoilers in it. Of course I know a standard like that would push everything past Wednesday into the stratosphere difficulty-wise. |
Dec-06-16
 | | AylerKupp: Great puzzle/spoiler. But I'm not sure that I would label it "easy". That's just sour grapes because, sure enough, I fell for 24.Ng5, not seeing 24...Qxg2+ or 25...Nb4+. |
Dec-06-16
 | | scormus: Great spoiler, very easy to miss the trap set by B. Well, I suppose I have to say it's a good one since I fell right into it. As a consolation prize I picked 24 Nh4 on my second go, which the engine rates as the best damage limitation move in a slightly inferior position for W. |

 | | Diademas: Wow, CG has really raised the bar.
Here is a suggestion for the Sunday puzzle.
White to play and win. click for larger view |

 | | Sally Simpson: :)
I got caught with my pants round ankles on that one. The funny bit is been walking around like that all day. A 3 second look, Ng5 wins. (I never even looked at the solution - it's a Tuesday, no need to look.) It's cheating. C.G. has cheated me out of my 100% Tuesday record. :) I only came here when I logged on again, the name rang a bell from something I'd seen months ago - could not remember what. Then I caught a glimpse of some of the posts and finally...the result. Rodolfo Tan Cardoso was the lad who spotted Wes So. |
Dec-06-16 | | Helloween: 24.Nh4 Qh5 25.Nf5 with the idea of g4 to break the bind, but White is still much worse...hm... |
Dec-06-16 | | dufferps: Like some others, I made the same bad move as loser Bahgat. Good Lesson. |
Dec-06-16 | | MaczynskiPratten: Good spoiler. Caught me hook, line and sinker. This looks like it's going to be a tough week. I checked moves like 24..Ne5 and Nb4 but missed Qxg2+ :( At least I'm in some very good company! |
Dec-06-16 | | WorstPlayerEver: We call this an 'instinker'. |
Dec-06-16 | | mworld: Failed miserably. My only redeeming moment was thinking that white must have sacked the exchange in order to come up with a brilliant move, so at least I managed to think like the person at the table. Of course, the only brilliant part of this was its choice as a Tuesday puzzle. |
Jul-05-17 | | RandomVisitor: Black gets a deeply placed piece on 11...Ne3 that causes lots of problems. Perhaps proper play was 9.bxc3 0-0 10.c4, chasing the knight back to f6 where it is of no immediate danger. |
Jul-05-17 | | kevin86: White pieces are in knots while black will queen the pawn(s). |
