Kibitzer's Corner
Aug-27-07  wolfmaster: The Staunton is one of the most aggresive gambits that open up the king, and I believe it to be sound.
Apr-03-10  jerseybob: I'll agree the Staunton is sound, having faced it several times, but Black's play here is far from best.

FSR: Heaven knows why Koltanowski didn't play 4.Qh5+!
Jan-04-13  jerseybob: FSR: 4.Qh5ch,g6 5.Qxd5(what else?),Nf6! and if 6.QxQch,KxQ yes, black can't castle but I've got a gut feeling he can hold. In blindfold chess, you need familiar openings, and Kolty was very familiar with the gambit f3-type positions, as the game shows.

FSR: <jerseybob> Probably, though it's not pleasant for Black after 7.Bg5. Opening Explorer
Jan-05-13  jerseybob: FSR: Nice little feature, that Opening Explorer. I played over both games you cite, and although in both cases black missed chances, it's still grisly. And then I suddenly remembered: 3..Nf6! is much better than 3..d5?!

Absolutely. Black shouldn't just hang back the gambit pawn for nothing, giving himself the worse pawn structure (and a misplaced king in your 6...Kxd8 line) to boot. Black gets a plus score after 3...Nf6 4.Bg5 Nc6! Opening Explorer; 3...Nf6 4.f3 d5 Opening Explorer; and 3...Nf6 4.g4 h6 Opening Explorer.
